Fifty petit jurors and twelve grand jurors were drawn for the January term of district court to open January 6 with Judge J. G. Patterson presiding. Grand jurors report second day. petit jurors to report second Monday.
Funeral services for Fred Small 67 of the Gracehill community were held at Kalona Baptist Church with Rev C B Hillis officiating. Burial followed in Sharon Hill cemetery. Small died suddenly of a heart attack. He lived in Gracehill seven eight years after earlier years in Kalona and worked at a tile and brick factory. Survived by wife two sons Lester of Gracehill and Clayce of Wellman and a married daughter near Boone.
Marshall, West Virginia June Ripley’s Believe It Or Not program featured Kallenberg a 67 year old blind grocer known in the area He died following illness leaving a small legacy in MarshallCounty community circles.
Fire confined to the basement and first story of the Fred Neiswanger building on the south square with smoke damage on the upper floor. Insurance covers the loss. rebuilding to start after adjusters review. Fire began in the coal bin near the furnace, suspected spontaneous combustion.
Des Moines press release confirms the 113th Cavalry, a mechanized National Guard unit, will mobilize for a year of training starting Monday Jan 13. Troop D Washington men report to the armory for final exams and then depart to Camp Bowie Brownwood Texas after mobilization day.
At the Washington Rotary meeting the toy exchange was held as part of a Christmas spirit but the gifts were given to children via the YWCA rather than kept by Rotarians. Dr C A Boice urged Ralph Shannon of the Journal as a standout community servant, while Shannon was recovering from an appendicitis operation in county hospital.
Christian Church members elected 1941 officers after a potluck dinner Wednesday night. Glenn B. Holden presided as chairman. officers include A. Nicholson and others, elders Cyrus Birka Roy Brobst Orville Caldwell Wilmer Lauderman J. T. Moore Ray Rathmel Harold Jarves Allen Bradford and Wade Pence. Deacons list includes Mrs. Wilmer Laudermoen and several others. Mrs. G B Holden heads Bible school with Virginia Holden as assistant secretary.
State Senator A. Claire Dewey said heavy freeze damage to apple trees in Iowa may occur in parts of the state but not in his area. After inspecting his orchard near town with County Agent J. W. Chandler they found no damage to fruit spurs or trees. Dewey believes Washington county and nearby areas escaped orchard losses due to pre freeze frosts that hardened new shoots.
A sideswipe accident on primary road No. 1, about a mile south of Kalona, injured several people. Floyd K. Baumert of Keota and Gene Nicholson of Washington drove the two cars, with $125 damage total. Injuries included bruises and cuts to Baumert Nicholson and others in the Nicholson car, plus head cuts to Marie Payne 17 Wayland Kathryn Ferguson Washington and Katherine Welcher Kalona. Wayne Durst 19 Washington received first aid for cuts and bruises at the Washington county hospital.
Mellie Hawkins died Sunday morning at home 907 South Avenue B after a stroke years ago. Funeral services were held at Shermans funeral home at 1 30 Tuesday with Dr F W Eastwood in charge. She was born July 6 1873 near Birmingham Iowa and married William Hawkins in 1893. Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery Birmingham Iowa. She left brothers and sisters including Mrs Frank A Roney Decorah Iowa and W K Hill Clarkedale Iowa.
Brighton community seeks answers as A A Clark, a leading local merchant, vanishes after leaving in a new Buick for a short vacation. Family reports no destination, possible amnesia theory, and efforts to locate him have so far failed. Clark’s business remains sound with no stated cause for his disappearance.
Frank B. Miller was elected president of the Washington Golf and Country Club succeeding Lester B. Orr. C. V. Crull became vice president and Will Harwood secretary and treasurer, with Harwood serving as secretary since the club’s organization in 192. Committees cover Grounds, Finance, House, and Membership. A membership drive is planned for next spring as the club expands. The board also includes Sidney Smith, T. R. Phillips, Dr. T. J. Pease, Ed Sullivan, Theodore B. Bailey and Paul Moore. The club reports strong finances and excellent grounds and anticipates a record season next year.
Mrs W L Fisher of Washington and Harry Hill of Birmingham are listed with Al Hill of Clarke dale Arizona. Early in her life Mrs Hawk united with the Methodist church at Birmingham.
A crash on a Brighton street edge injures no one but damages two cars driven by Claude Houghton of Des Moines and Isadore Brottman of Davenport. Houghton’s car overturns. repairs around 200 dollars and 75 dollars for Brottman’s. Brottman fined ten dollars for driving on the wrong side. A Seitz of Fairfield car was ditched near Brighton bridge causing about 50 dollars in damage.
About 200 people attended the Washington County Beef Producers banquet at the YMCA. George D. Haskell, associate professor of commerce at the State University of Iowa, spoke on future farm prices amid World War II conditions and US rearmament. He projected a 35 billion dollar five year defense bill and discussed financing options including bank reserves, tax increases, and bond sales.
Mrs. Joe Maxwell aged 67 died Wednesday evening at home 432 East Madison Washington after three years of failing health. Funeral services Saturday at 2 PM in Sherman Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Eastwood and Dr. Keagy with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She is survived by her husband Lloyd Maxwell a son two sisters four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
