New Cars Licensed in Week Hit Fifty-Year Pace for 1940
Twenty six new cars were registered in the county treasurer office this week the strongest week in years. In the first licensing week of 1940 492 owners received plates compared with 420 last year. No special numbers will be reserved after the fifteenth of the month. Council Rejects Armory Offer
The city council rejected an armory deed offer from the Washington Armory Corporation after a special meeting. Capt. O J Shown said the city cannot accept ownership due to legal obstacles and might reorganize the armory group in the new year. The council found that under the proposed deed the city would bear maintenance costs with tax funds, which is illegal.

Washington county tax sale date moved to January 29 for properties advertised over non payment of taxes. County Treasurer Marion S. George adjourned the sale. At the initial sale 42 properties were bid on and eleven were sold to individuals.

Rural Children At Free Movies In Washington County
Grade school children from rural schools and other towns in Washington county attended a free morning movie at the State theatre. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce as part of a Christmas promotion, tickets were mailed to teachers for distribution. Washington school children were excluded as they would attend a separate free showing by theater manager Ralph Pratt. The program, titled Happy Hour, began at 10 o’clock with a large crowd of children.

Fatal injury in farm accident near Wellman
A. C. Swartzendruber, 73, died after his clothes were caught in a feed grinder pulley at his home eight and one half miles northwest of Wellman. The accident happened Monday afternoon while he worked with his son Omer. He died Thursday morning from a severe head injury and paralysis on the left side. He leaves wife Eliza Yoder Swartzendruber, one daughter, four sons, three brothers, three sisters, and twelve grandchildren. He was born October 1866 in Johnson County and was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church.
