The National Bank of Washington began operations Friday at nine o clock with heavy customer traffic and deposits exceeding withdrawals. Fifty percent of the Old Washington National bank deposits were released to depositors to aid local recovery. New deposits on day one topped 520000, signaling public confidence as Vice President C E B Negus pledged vigilant service and licensed status by the comptroller of currency.

Rich Wins First 1934 Auto Plate in County
J. J. Rich of Crawfordsville was first at the county treasurer’s office to obtain a 1934 car license bearing Iowa 92-1 for his vehicle and also secured No. 2 for another car. Early morning licenses numbered 1 through 16 were claimed by residents including Dave Blankenhorn, Perry Reiner, Henry Underwood, Fred Werner, and others. Only ten licenses had been issued by nine, as the annual registration will span two months with no penalty for using old plates until February 1. No trucks were licensed.

John Godwin, a renter two miles east of town, received 1 2 bushels of corn sealed in the crib for a loan of $558.90 at 45 cents a bushel. Mrs. John Emde aged 74 died at her home four miles north of Wellman after a fifteen week illness. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Pleasant Hill church Joetown with Rev. W. A. Hinek presiding. Survived by husband Will son and Mrs Otto Kitzman of What Cheer eight grandchildren and a deceased infant. Maiden name Mary Schuessler born 1859 in Baden Germany they moved to this country and later settled near Horseshoe Bend corner Iowa.

Mrs. A. Co. Owen reports the death of Miss Bessie Wallace who lived here for a year and a half. She taught as a substitute in Washington high school and helped stage junior college plays. A distant cousin of Mrs. Owen, she taught in Luxor Egypt and a Kentucky mission school before later illness and death on November 16 at a Detroit sanitarium.

Fairchild Funeral Held for Lloyd Wakefield
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home for Lloyd Wakehiild 21 who died Wednesday in Gary Indiana after a tuberculosis illness. Rev C Vinz of the Baptist church officiated and burial was at Elm Grove cemetery. The Fairchilds formerly lived here and later resided in Gary. He leaves his parents Mr and Mrs Peter Fairchild a brother Kenneth and his widow and baby.
