Mrs. James N. Phillips Dies in California
Harriett Anna Bailey Phillips died in Santa Ana California after gall bladder illness and stroke. She was 59 and longtime Washington resident member of the county hospital board and active in Rebekah lodge Farm Bureau and Women’s groups. Surviving are husband James N. Phillips five children and five grandchildren with siblings and a brother. Funeral set for August 6 at 2 30 p m at the Methodist church with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Burial arrangements handled by L A Jones Funeral Home.

At a special meeting on Friday August 2 the city council rejected all bids for surfacing about six miles of Washington dirt streets with crushed rock and a bituminous layer. Bids were too high and failed to meet requirements. The council will re advertise in hopes of better bids with plan changes, delaying work by a month or six weeks and considering adding more streets such as Fast Park South Town to Wolfgreen house area and parts of West Main West Second and East Harrison streets.

People of Washington and vicinity heard the Oskaloosa Municipal Band in Fine Park on Wednesday evening. The 35 member group directed by Wilhelm Read played to a large, approving crowd between 8 30 and 9 30. The program matched the Washington Municipal Band’s standard in weekly concerts, and this out of town appearance follows Mt Pleasant’s band in the park.
