Washington Drum and Bugle Corps Earn Third at Cedar Rapids
The American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps of Washington placed third in a Cedar Rapids contest with eleven top corps, winning 200 dollars. Ft. Dodge won first, Webster City second, and Aledo Illinois fourth, while over 100 Washington boosters traveled to Iowa to support the team and judge officials praised the corps for its performance.

Chester Anderson 14 Dies After Appendix Operation
Chester William Anderson age 14 oldest child of Mr and Mrs W A Anderson of 1203 East Washington died at Washington county hospital after an operation for ruptured appendix. Born March 15 1915 in Nickerson Nebraska he moved with his family to Wellman and then to this city in 1924 where his father is vice president of Washington National Bank. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 30 pm at Jones Funeral Home with Dr W W Bowers in charge and Elm Grove cemetery as the burial site.

Miller Gets Ten Years For Station Robbery
Wayne Miller aged 22 was bound over to the grand jury for the Jugenheimer service station robbery on June 5. He pleaded guilty before Judge Bechly in Oskaloosa and received a ten year term in the state penitentiary. Deputy Sweet and County Attorney Morrison handled the case with extradition papers signed by Governor Hamill. Miller formerly lived near Wellman and admitted involvement. Sheriff Milo Cafferty accompanied the officers seeking a burglary charge from Iowa county. The arrest followed his Topeka, Kansas apprehension at the request of Sheriff Denison.

Painter Sentenced to Ten Years for Brighton Robbery
Charles B. Painter of Mt. Pleasant received a ten year sentence after pleading before Judge Bechly in Oskaloosa for breaking into the E. E. Swank filling station at Brighton. He admitted a prior drinking party, gave uncertain statements, and aided officers by revealing where items were hidden. Damage included broken pumps tires accessories candy cigars and dumped oil.

Reif and Wellman Man Given Parole After Liquor Raid
O C Reif of Wellman appeared before Judge Frank Bechly in Oskaloosa and pled guilty to maintaining a liquor nuisance. He was sentenced to six months and fined 300 dollars and paroled. Sheriff Denison and Deputy Sweet raided his home July 3 finding ten gallons of alcohol in the weeds behind the house. He had previously been bound over to the grand jury on 500 dollar bonds.

Two In Hospital After Road Crash West Of Washington
Roy Jack Norton and Hubert Morgan were hospitalized with serious injuries after Norton’s Chevrolet roadster struck the Rock Island overhead bridge west of Washington. Norton suffered a broken kneecap a broken wrist and multiple cuts and bruises while Morgan had facial lacerations and possible scars with no broken bones. Tourists rushed them to Washington county hospital and Norton faces weeks of confinement as he recovers.

Cavalry Troop F of Washington leaves Sunday at 2 AM for Camp Des Moines Camp Dodge for fifteen days. Sixty three cavalrymen and two officers travel on a special train with four advance men already en route. Two Junction Residents Die In Car Plunge
Mr and Mrs George Hendrickson of near Columbus Junction died Tuesday evening when their sedan plunged through the rail of the McKeown bridge over the Cedar River on the Conesville road. The car landed in water after skidding on a sharp curve, as rescuers and hundreds arrived from Muscatine and surrounding areas.

Riverside Man Fined for Using Washed Cancelled Stamps
Leo Cruz formerly of Riverside and now living in Cedar Rapids received a $500 fine and costs in a federal case in Columbia South Carolina for using washed cancelled stamps. An investigation showed a ring of men washed and resold used stamps. Cruz claimed he was an innocent purchaser.
