A Chicago-Wabash Express note describes Agent Hall exposing a Barton post office rogue in a North West town. The mail was skimmed by a stout grocery keeper who dispensed peanuts to distract the crowd as she diverted a peck of mixed matter from a dropped bag. Hall interrupted the ploy and recovered the seized items.

In Weberville on August 29, 1849 the emigrants faced a saleratus shortage. Colonel P offered a quarter to buy a quarter pound. the grocer replied it would cost fifteen dollars a pound, leaving the Colonel to retreat with his last two bits.
Timeline claims Aaron Burr sought to ruin a coaster captain by mutiny and murder. Burr allegedly connived with sailors to destroy the vessel, but the venture failed on the outward voyage.
