State Democratic Convention of 1857 Highlights
The Indianapolis gathering opened January 8 1857 with Joseph W. Chapman chairing. Delegates from most counties attended as Willard Holman and Carr vied for president, Willard winning 338 to 233. Willard urged harmony, a resolutions committee was formed, and officers for the state were nominated. McClure Dodd Jones McDonald Hanna Perkins Davisson Worden named for supreme bench. Afternoon session set Central Committee and Superintendent vote, James J. Rugg defeating O B Torbet. State Central Committee listed with Voorhees Stuart Everts Sprott etc.
