Washburns First Settler Daniel Webster Corning Dies
Daniel Webster Corning Washburns first settler died Monday night after attending a Commercial Club meeting. He was born 1862 in Manchester New Hampshire and arrived in Ashland in 1883, later founding Washburns Pioneer grocery and City Drug store. He served as Port of Washburn customs collector for 23 years and held multiple local leadership roles. He is survived by daughter Bertha son Bruce two sisters and a brother. The community closed businesses for the funeral.

Cable Fair Held Saturday in Bayfield County
The Cable district fair showcased top agricultural crops and fine department exhibits in cooking and crafts. A double header baseball games Mason versus Cable and Drummond versus Cable entertained attendees while a steer roping contest drew interest. The Hayward Band provided music and visitors reported an enjoyable afternoon.

Ten Acre Grapes Farm Planned in Du Pont Park Addition
Frederick Schimmel of Town plans to open a ten acre fruit farm in Du Pont Park Addition to grow grapes and other small fruits. He will start with one acre of grapes and expand across the remaining land. Bayfield county already has grape trials at C H Wiehe's farm yielding high quality fruit sold in Duluth. The site sits on a southeast slope with sandy loam soil and clay subsoil, favorable for fruit cultivation.
