Bayfield County launches the Fourth Liberty Loan on September 28 under County Chairman A H Wilkinson. Officials expect to exceed the Third Loan quota within four days as the campaign begins with strong organization and a rush on opening day. Subscriptions support troops overseas and aim to weaken the Kaiser and German military power.
Residents celebrate City Council action to begin sewer work on West 5th Street. The Board of Public Works will hear bids on the sewer project on the 30th and work should proceed promptly. Washburn Water Co is ordered to lay a water line this fall. Mayor Morgan backs the plan, citing persistent local demand.
Elizabeth Finstad, daughter of Mr and Mrs H J Finstad of Superior, a 2010 Hughitt avenue graduate of a Minneapolis art school, is named assistant art instructor at Denfield High in West Duluth. She studied at Central high and formerly resided here, known to Washburn residents.
M S Lamoreaux of Chicago E Kenfield of Bemidji and C A Lamoreaux of Duluth were here last week on Kefield Lamoreaux company business. C E Estabrook has the forms in for a new two story residence on 3rd avenue and 4th street described as a beauty when completed.
Bayfield County surpassed the government estimate in last Thursday’s registration with 2489 registrants vs 2485 expected. The drive used a large volunteer corps and operated in an orderly manner. Secretary Oscar and his assistants are mailing questionnaires to registrants aged 19 to 36.
Peter Melland confessed to the Mason State Bank robbery before Circuit Judge G N Risford in Ashland and received two and a half years in the state prison at Waupon. He led Deputy Long to the hidden money in Mason, where over $1100 was recovered, reducing the total loss.
Judge A. M. Warden suffered severe injuries when his Ford touring car overturned on a slippery Nevers road between Washburn and the Warden farm. He was thrown from the vehicle, sustaining facial cuts and a broken collarbone, and was taken to Ashland hospital for treatment. The accident occurred as the car, driven by one of the Warden boys, skidded while en route to town.
A reception was held at the Methodist church parlors on Tuesday evening for the teachers of the Washburn Public schools. A large number attended and a delightful time was had with light refreshments served during the evening.
Aaron Engen from Washington state visits relatives and friends in the city. He is the brother of Mrs. H JP Axelberg.
An explosion Sunday morning at Mono House No 1 of the T N X department at the DuPont plant in Barksdale wrecked the brick building tearing out both ends and damaging the roof. No deaths or injuries reported though the plant patrolman was nearby and an investigation is underway.
Amos M. Hansen begins constructing a new 50 by 110 foot fireproof brick store on Bayfield street on the site of his present property. The Paulson shoe store is temporarily moved to 2nd avenue Bayfield corner before relocation to Doyle store rear lots. Hansen will run business from the old building during construction with walls removed as new ones rise. The new block promises a premier city facility with double display windows and modern design.
Rev. and Mrs. O. W. Smith leave for Evansville where Rev. Smith will serve as pastor of the Congregational church. He recently resigned here due to his daughter's illness and change of climate. Locals regret the move but extend good wishes for their future.
A special primary election will be held in October in the eleventh district to select a candidate for the short term in Congress after Senator Lenroot's resignation. Nelson was nominated for the regular term but must file new papers for the unexpired Lenroot term and face a campaign if opposed.
The town of Barksdall will open a new joint high school this month. The building cost around $60,000 and is described as a beautiful structure.
Harry Kennedy, formerly of Iron River, purchases the G. D. Kyper house on 3rd street. Mr. Kyper and his family relocate to Milwaukee where he teaches in the high school this season.
Observe the request Washburn automobile owners show patriotism by dispensing with pleasure riding on Sunday. Very few cars were seen on streets last Sunday except for urgent business. Some oppose rationing gasoline but the government says a card system would be slow and costly. The order is expected to help alleviate the shortage as public compliance rises.
Miss Emma Duguay daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Duguay arrives in France for Army Red Cross work. A Mayo Clinic Rochester graduate, she enlisted in late April after training at Mayo Hospital to serve abroad.
Names of Fred Arseneau and William Finnegan were omitted from the service flag at the Catholic church. Both are sons of local residents and recently enlisted in the U S armed forces and are now in training camps awaiting overseas orders.
Peter Johnson of Mason, a substantial Bayfield county farmer who owns a fine farm on Birch Lake Road, spent Tuesday as a business visitor in the city.
Bayfield county prepares a major World War I army service contingent from the 1918 class for departure the week of October 5 to the Waco Texas training camp. The list includes registrants from across the county and several Washburn youths, with many names repeatedly listed as ready for service. The community is urged to give the boys a royal send-off and to track departure times from the published roster.
The Norwegian Lutheran Church announces services this Sunday morning at 10 30 with Sunday school at noon and English services in the evening. An Engoe service will be held at Mr Wag ness farm Sunday at 6 20 in the afternoon. A prayer meeting is scheduled Thursday evening. Confirmant classes meet Saturday morning. Norwegian class at 10 and English class at 11.
Mrs Selmer Haugen came home Sunday after an appendicitis operation at Ashland Hospital. Roy Taberman attended the Bayfield County Fair at Iron River on Wednesday.
The DuPont Company progresses on a large scale housing project along east Bayfield Third and Fourth streets. They expect to finish most residences within one hundred days after starting. Houses include six room cottages four room duplexes and two story duplexes with concrete foundations water sewer lights baths asphalt shingle roofs Beaver board interiors. Streets are being improved with cement walks trees preserved and utilities installed. Hundreds of workers are employed as the project advances toward occupancy.
Private Fred Fige of the 127 Infantry writes to his sister Mrs. John Horan describing a recent engagement in which American troops overran German lines. He recalls trenches, over the top charges, and the constant sound of bullets as they advanced with units driving the Germans back.
Harley Moberg drove a touring car into a ditch on the Ashland road last Thursday evening at the turn below Hosmer corner. Several occupants were slightly injured. Nell Simmons is in Duluth for vacation. Martha Kasmarak runs Chooge Palace of Sweets during her absence.
The Bayfield County fair at Iron River runs this week, extending one day to showcase crops, grains, and livestock. Washburn sends many exhibitors as harness races thrill crowds with good entries and plentiful premiums.
The government casualty list lists Anton Wiegan of the 107th Military Police, part of a volunteer company that left the city under Capt. Peavey, wounded in action in France. Relatives learned of the injury earlier. the extent remains undisclosed. He is in a base hospital with hopes for a quick recovery.
New city cases of whooping cough not yet reported will trigger physician checks and possible quarantine. Any new case will be quarantined for six weeks from reporting date, applies only to the affected child, and must be reported promptly per State Board of Health orders, Bertha Olson, Visiting Nurse.
Attorney George G. MacDonald of Ashland was a business visitor in the city on Tuesday.
