New Telephone Company Formed by Wannebo Road Farmers

About thirty five farmers along Wannebo road near Long Lake plan a Saturday meeting to organize a cooperative telephone company. They will subscribe stock to build a line to the city and connect with existing lines, with subscribers owning instruments and maintaining the lines until operation begins. The effort aims to improve local communication and ties with the city.

Season Opens Tomorrow For Game Birds In State

The hunting season starts tomorrow for partridge woodcock plover and snipe and runs until December 1. Prairie chicken prairie hen and grouse reopen tomorrow morning and stay open through the month. President Mrs Lawson of the state W O T U and her daughter Miss Laura Lawson visit the city and will use it as headquarters.

Labor Day Celebration in Washburn a Grand Success

A sunny Labor Day in Washburn featured a nine event parade, labor address by Hon. W. F. Shea, a high diving dog, and a Drummond beat Washburn 9 to 7 in baseball. Highlights included races, balloon ascent by Prof. Leon Gage, a water fight won by the west end, and a cable slide by George Glacier, ending with dancing and praise for the organizing committees.

Birch Trees Dying Threat to Bayfield County Forests

Bayfield County birch forests show yellowing and widespread die off due to a leaf dwelling worm damaging the underside of leaves. Experts fear thousands of birch trees could perish this fall if cold nights do not halt the pest. It remains uncertain if the worm will spread to other species or abate naturally.

W A Loveland, a large land buyer in Bayfield County, has been at Manistee Michigan this week acquiring goats for his section 31 property near Four Mile Creek Road. He plans to place 200 to 3800 Angora goats on his land to clear brush and foliage while producing fine wool.

Revival Meetings Set in Washburn Pastoral Plan

Rev J H Chatterson assigned to Washburn arrives Friday or Saturday to begin a month of tent meetings led by Rev Phelps with pastor and two deaconesses. Beasmore will join next week with cornet and singing as part of a chorus. The church invites all Washburn residents to attend and music will be prominent. Regular services resume in the Methodist church afterward.

Catholic Fair Draws Broad Attendance and Likely Best Yet

The annual Catholic church fair this week is well attended with many fancy articles on display for sale. Organizers say it promises to be one of the best ever held and the sale items attract many shoppers. The fair will close Saturday evening.

County Fair Plans Promising Greatest Event Yet

Iron River booster Joe Doucette toured the city to promote the Bayfield County Fair set for the last three days of the month. Four thousand dollars in prizes will be awarded with premium lists and literature distributed. Racing events include 2:10 and 2:30 pace races, trot races, mule and pony events, drawing large crowds.

Norwegian Lutheran Church Announces Next Sunday Closure

The Norwegian Lutheran Church will not hold services next Sunday. Confirmants are to meet at the church on Saturday September 18. Lodges resume meetings after summer, with the Masonic fraternity meeting last week and the K. P. lodge resuming Tuesday. Other lodges will follow shortly.
