Manager Downs of Washburn Electric Light and Power says white way lighting work will begin shortly and be rushed to finish before freezing weather. Materials are ready, curbing must finish first, then four ornamental lights will line each block with conduit wiring and white globe tops replacing old poles.
A regional forgery scheme produced checks resembling those of DuPont Manufacturing at Barksdale. Forgeries signed H. S. Risler cashed at Ashland banks and local businesses, with about 1000 dollars obtained. Saloon customers aided the operation, and merchants faced significant losses as banks identified the counterfeit paper and notified DuPont officials.
Open season begins September seven but scarce game birds due to a poor hatch and cold weather. Iron River reports similar scarcity while hunters still obtain licenses. a county clerk reports a rush of license payments. Separate note says saloon cashiers passed forged checks dated August twenty ninth, averaging twenty one eighty, as forgers remain hard to identify.
In a brisk Wisconsin primary Governor Phillipp and state treasurer Henry Johnson clinched nominations. La Follette tickets led by E F Dithmar Merlin Hull and Walter Owen gained state posts, with La Follette ahead in U S Senator race by 10 000 to 25 000. Close county contests featured Sheriff race between Murray and Happle and District Attorney Morris leading.
Rev H L Goodrich longtime Methodist pastor here will stay another year after church vote and Baraboo West Wisconsin Conference approval. He is praised for hard work and church growth, with local friends glad for his continuation.
Large turnout from our city planned to join Bayfield for a joint Labor Day celebration, but rain and bad weather kept many at home. Bayfield officials had prepared a fine program, yet the inclement conditions reduced attendance.
Miss Pearl White daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward White and Oliver Demplie were married Monday morning at St Louis Catholic church Fr Seeboth officiating Ruth White sister of the bride and Leo Demolie brother of the groom served as bridesmaid and best man A wedding breakfast followed at the bride’s home The couple plans to move to Milwaukee where Demplie will continue medical studies at Marquette college They are well known in the city and the groom is completing his medical course next year

Nov Lutheran church announces morning and evening services next Sunday with Sunday school at noon. The Vikings meet Wednesday evening hosted by Mrs. A Holman. Prayer meeting Thursday evening. Confirmants meet Saturday with Norwegian class at 10 and English class at 11.
Contractor Mersna finished laying the Bayfield street storm sewers on Saturday evening last. Labor shortages delayed the contract but work was rushed without hindering the paving. The new sewers will drain surface water along the paved streets and connect to the main sewer on Washington Avenue.
Twin girls born Tuesday afternoon to Mr and Mrs Frank Brandl. Mother and babies are reported as getting along nicely. Frank is described as the happiest man in town as friends extend congratulations.
Abe Taraldson of Duluth is visiting the city with friends, making a brief stop during the trip.
The University of Wisconsin Extension Division plans a fall class in retail selling advertising and store management for Washburn and nearby towns. G P Irwin will lead with years of practical experience including four years at the Dry Goods Economist in New York. The course runs six weekly sessions and is open to merchants employees bookkeepers bankers and real estate men. J P O Conner will arrive soon to organize the program.
Miss Alice Clark, staying with the Vandenbergs at the Lamoreaux Hotel for two to three weeks, returned to Phillips on Tuesday evening. Miss Esther McDermott from St. Paul arrived Saturday to accept a trimming position in the Downs millinery department at the Legal Dry Goods company, bringing the latest trimming ideas.
Thomas E. Wolley of LaCrosse holds the paving contract and has nearly completed curb and gutter work. Paving will start immediately with three crews to excavate, lay the concrete base, and lay brick. Officials urge completion before freezing time, aiming for fall finish and a month of work if weather cooperates.
Beers Club from this city faced Mellen last Sunday at Mellen, where Washburn edged the home team 3 to 2. The visitors brought a sizable crowd and praised a fine exhibition of baseball despite the close score.
Max Happle of Iron River visits the city at the week's start. George Oscar arrives Sunday from Perry Sound Ontario and will stay two weeks visiting relatives and friends. He works in the acid department of the Canadian Explosive company.
Ashland and Washburn square off Sunday in the final baseball game to be played on the city grounds this season. Washburn has won past meetings, but new players on both sides portend a close contest. Ashland expects 500 local supporters while Pratt estimates about 1000 Washburn fans will attend.
A new grocery store operated by A Thrall has opened on the corner of Bayfield street and 7th avenue west. The store offers a first class line of groceries and provisions and aims for honest dealings and fair profit to all.
Miss Eva Posey and William Aldrich were married in Duluth early this week. Washburn friends are awaiting opportunity to extend congratulations.
Mrs J J Sharp arrived in the city last Friday from Kankakee Illinois where she had been visiting during the summer months.
