LaFay Brothers Freed After Misidentification in Murder Case

George LaFay surrendered to officers after his whereabouts on the murder night were explained. Joe LaFay, held in jail, was discharged for lack of evidence. The two brothers were arrested with officers but released when ruled not implicated. LaFay says he roamed the countryside and worked in several towns.

Bayfield County Fair Plans Big Event Push

The Bayfield County Agricultural Society announces the Bayfield County Fair with $1000 speed prizes and $2000 for exhibits. Iron River’s F J Kopplin and C E Russell lead efforts to attract attendance from Washburn and Bayfield. September 9 to 11 are set for the Fourth Annual Fair, aiming to boost county prosperity through strong stock grain vegetable and race displays and state fair submissions.

Local Couple Weds Quietly in Home Ceremony at Houghton

Mr James Williamson of Houghton and Miss Louise Lamberton of the city were married last Saturday between six and seven at the groom’s sister Mrs J D Leighton’s home. Revered Sinclair of the Methodist Church presided. They will reside in Houghton.

Military funeral planned for fallen soldier in Ashland

John Wannebo, killed in the Philippines, will be honored in Ashland with a military funeral next Sunday. Company D of Ashland and veterans from Civil and Spanish American Wars will attend, with Civic societies invited. Services begin at 2:30 pm from Flottum Undertaking Rooms to the cemetery with ministers and a short sermon by Reverend Thomas Barker.

After Them Again Slot Machines Face Fresh Crackdown

Reported threats led to arrests and a Bayfield round up of operators who had removed or blocked machines. Despite efforts to quit, offenders returned to business, prompting an officer to collect names of those who allowed access. Authorities hope this ends slot machine activity for a time.
