City Council to Fix Tax Levy for Next Year

The city council will meet tomorrow evening to set the taxes for the coming year. A 3.5 percent rate on the city’s assessed valuation of 1,476,400 would raise about 51,674, with allocations to County tax, interest on bonds, judgments, and other funds. Additional license revenue of roughly 10,000 will follow in July 1907. The Davidson stock will be sold to the highest bidder at the store building next Tuesday morning.

Letter for John Clemmic Letter Taken From Post Office

A letter addressed to John Clemmic containing a money order was stolen from the local post office. The recipient initially admitted receiving it and later denied knowledge. An inspector may be called to resolve the case once Postmaster Nels Nelson returns from a hunting trip.

The Hines Lumber company shut its saw mill on Chequamegon Bay ending their timber operations here. The small mill may be sold to Akeley & Sprague. Remaining stock is being shipped out and the machine shop will likely continue briefly though moved from this city is unlikely.

News reaches Washburn shareholders that Arizona Copper Mountain Mining has reorganized and will begin large scale copper mining. Captain Harry Roberts of Minnesota and Wm Lucia of Hurley Wisconsin lead the new effort to develop and ship ore, boosting hopes for about $10,000 invested.

Broner and Miss Heffelfinger Wed in Secret Bayfield Ceremony

Charles Broner and Minnie Heffelfinger were secretly married last Thursday at the groom's residence on Bayfield Street. The couple, long known in the city, were surprised by friends when the ceremony was disclosed. Miss Heffelfinger came from Rice Lake over a year ago and has served as housekeeper. The groom, a longtime pioneer, works for C N Cramer & Co. They plan to remain in the city as husband and wife. The Times offers best wishes for happiness.
