The Sprague Lumber Co mill finished a highly successful season on Friday night, having cut 10,251,302 feet of lumber and 2,350,000 boards. The plant operated from June 14 for 160 days and 52 nights despite early startup delays. A steady crew worked round the clock and the mill will close briefly for winter repairs before a full run resumes next season.
Valentine Raeth in the Milwaukee Free Press urges a law prohibiting shooting female deer at any time or during open season to reduce deer season accidents. He argues hunters must see horns before firing and that banning does would end the season locally, as few deer are killed at close range.
Frank B Lamoreaux of Ashland is appointed to assist in prosecuting John Dietz and family members. Lamoreaux and a stenographer have spent the past week at Winter and Hayward gathering evidence for the trial.
Grandma Sholtz aged eighty died Saturday afternoon at her son Simon Sholtz's home from dropsy. Funeral was held Monday from St. Louis Catholic church and interment in the Protestant cemetery. She was a longtime city resident well known among Polish people.
A county school convention will convene at the County Court House in this city on Thursday of next week with expected large attendance. School clerks from every sub district are anticipated to attend the meeting. County Superintendent Miss Jessie N. Smith has prepared an engaging program featuring speakers Henry P. Peterson and W. E. Larson and Mrs. J. H. Ketchem.
Legacy Girl May Legacy, 11, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Legacy of Washington Ave, was accidentally shot in the arm Sunday afternoon by her cousin Willie Legacy of this city. He was handling a 22 revolver when it discharged. The wound is not serious.
The Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church hosted a chicken pie supper and candy sale at the Masonic hall Tuesday evening. The event was well attended and financially successful, reflecting the group’s skill at drawing large crowds.
Bayfield warden Louis Bashaw who was arrested a week ago for fishing with nets without a license pleaded guilty before Judge Garvin in Ashland last Friday. He was fined five dollars and costs. Bashaw was arrested by Game Warden George Buchanan and his fish were confiscated.
Students and faculty reached a year long agreement to abolish hazing at the University of Wisconsin. Since the fall opening there has not been a single hazing incident, seen as a sign of student self-government endorsed by President Charles R. Van Hise.
P. P. Stamness of Manistique Michigan arrived in the city last week and is employed at the Nelson Jewelry store in the repair department. Stamness formerly lived here.
Wisconsin swings open the deer season for counties with unprotected areas tonight for twenty days. In Bayfield County about 500 licenses have been issued by County Clerk Nels M. Olear, with expectations of around 1500 by season end. Hunters will flood the woods, many from outside counties, as deer are plentiful and the risk of accidents concerns officials.
Mrs. Jake Dibbell left Tuesday to visit friends at the head of the lakes for a few days. Dr. J R Mitchell is arranging to install a new heating plant in his new building. The place has been thoroughly overhauled and the heating system will make it a nice place.

Bond set at 40000 on deputy John Harp murder charge raised after bond approval, but new warrants to be served keep him jailed. Sawyer County officials plan to require new bonds for each offense, delaying release.
Lighthouse keepers in the Apostle Islands will lay up all fog signal stations and extinguish lights at sunrise December 10, ending the season. Navigators must rely on own resources as Lake Superior traffic drops. most boats head to winter quarters by late December. Ice likely ends river navigation before lighthouses go out.
Dan White of Alpena Michigan and his brother Ed White, now residents of this city, have moved into rooms in the Paver building and are considering opening a grocery in the former Ike Berman store space.
Joseph Doucette waived examination in Second Municipal Court Iron River last Tuesday morning before acting judge George F. Morgan. Charged with arson based on a complaint by Charles J. Good deputy state fire warden, Doucette was held to await trial under $500 bond.
Miss Hicks who has been ill with diphtheria will return to teach the Primary Department of the Pioneer School next week. During her absence Miss Mary O Sullivan and Miss Julia Stevens have taught in the Primary department.
A Tuesday election approved making the city high school a free district and eligible for state aid. The vote was 352 in favor to 54 against. State aid amounts to about $450 annually, previously denied under prior classifications.
Last week new settlers purchased land around the city in Bayfield County. Purchases include W Hall of Duluth 40 acres in 6-49-4 C P McDonald of Duluth 40 acres in 6-49-4 C Wright of Duluth 40 acres in 23-49-5 T Carswell of Evelith 80 acres in 4-48-5 and Mr Cummins of St Paul 80 acres in 26-49-5.
The remodeling of the old bowling alley building for W. T. Meade of the Orpheum theatre is progressing well and is expected to be ready by the first part of next week. Ed Williams advertises 40 acres of fruit and dairy land at Three Switch schoolhouse on easy terms.
