Bayfield county to register men 21 to 31 under new law
Registration officials in Bayfield County prepare to register all males aged 21 to 31 under the new conscription bill. County Clerk Nels M. Oscar says registration day will be set this week and failure to register will lead to arrest. Detailing two blanks per person, boards will issue cards proving compliance and allow arrests for noncompliance. Washburn expects about twenty five drafts, selected like jurors.

Funeral Held For Gust Loken In Washburn
The funeral of Gust Loken, who died May 12 at his Washburn home, was held Tuesday at the Norwegian Lutheran church with Rev. Christiansen presiding. Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery. Loken, long a local resident, is survived by his wife and two children.

Death Calls Rev John Gibson After Fifty Years of Ministry
The Rev. John Gibson, longtime Congregational pastor in Wisconsin, died May 11, 1917 at age 72 after a 50 year preaching career in England and the United States. He served in Solon Springs before moving to Washburn near his family, and his life included pastorates in Byron Illinois, South Kaukauna, and Iron River. His funeral in this city drew many clergy and mourners. interment was at Woodland Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, four sons, two daughters, nineteen grandchildren, a brother and two sisters in England.

The May term opens with a notably large docket for Bayfield County Circuit Court. Seven criminal cases include desertion non support fornication larceny assault and two for excise violations. First Arrest Under Speeding Ordinance in Washburn
Harvey DeMars of the Service Garage was arrested Saturday by Chief Kerr for violation of the speeding ordinance. He paid a fine in Municipal court on Monday. Earlier in the season several Ashland residents were arrested for speeding, signaling a growing tendency to observe the rules.
