DuPont plans seven to eight new buildings at its Barksdale depot site to house employees with crews at work clearing underbrush. Officials anticipate a massive expansion with 4000 to 5000 workers and new lines, a power plant, an extra water line to the lake, and several plant enlargements.
Charles A. Rentrop of Chicago issues a challenge to wrestling rival Jack Hagensick in a Times letter. Rentrop disputes a claimed defeat, plans to visit the city next week to correct the record, and bets that he can defeat a Barksdale competitor. He offers $500 to beat Anderson twenty times in one hour and claims world middleweight status at 158 pounds with sides of $500 or $1000.
County Food Administrator John J. Fisher of Bayfield names a Washburn committee to regulate food prices. Members include George F. Morgan D. W. Corning S. E. Swanson Ed Plant F. A. Bell C. E. Patterson Mrs. C. F. Morris Mary E. Daziel and L. N. Clausen. They will meet weekly to set maximum prices.
The Men's Club of the Congregational church has contracted with the University of Wisconsin for another lecture course in the city for next fall and winter. The chosen program is excellent and deserves broad public support as a valuable city initiative.
Marriage notice from Milwaukee announces Miss Gladys Norma Landis daughter of Mr and Mrs L C Landis wed to Mr L P Lessard on March 9. The groom Phil Lessard is a Washburn alumnus with a Milwaukee firm. Washburn friends extend congratulations amid balmy spring days and many cars on the street.
President Wilson signed the daylight saving bill. On March 31 at 2 am clocks advance one hour nationwide. The law stays in effect until September 1. Savings are projected in electricity and fuel use, with gas companies feeling the impact as well.
An Easter Monday ball will be held at Garden Hall on April 1 hosted by manager Scantland with a six piece orchestra. A Gruber violin, Anna Peterson piano, W Jones clarinet, A DeHuff flute, Henry cornet, and John Westerlund drums will perform as noted. Public is invited.

Ed Ravey of Chicago Packing and Provision Co. did business in Twin Cities last week. The Odd Fellows nearly finish their lodge rooms in the Nelson block, gaining fine quarters as the entire building is owned by the lodge.
Irvine L Lenroot, Democratic? No Republican nominee for U S senator in the 11th district, defeated James Thompson of LaCrosse, with backing from loyalists while German voters largely opposed him. Davies and McCarty polled strong Democratic votes, Berger the socialist carried part of the socialist share, and Lenroot received endorsements from his home district. Election on April 7 looms as supporters urge efforts.
A Bayview Bayfield County tobacco fund social at Houghton school last Saturday raised 37 dollars. Miss Hoshovd and Ash land sisters offered strong sales. A follow up benefit is planned at Roosevelt school on March 23 with a fine program and invited attendees. The town leads in Red Cross and Y M C A funds by population.
The Bayfield county vote totals for the senatorship, excluding Barnes and Bell, show Lenroot with 885, McCarthy 383, Davies 103, Thompson 98, Berger 116. The result underscores strong county loyalty and offers a caution to opponents.
Citizens of Washburn urged to attend a Wednesday March 27 meeting at 8 pm at the Commercial Club. Prof Geo Potter of the State Horticulture Society will speak on garden programs. Women urged to attend. residents with vacant lots to plant or lend to buyers should list with A P Fraser, City Garden Committee chair.
The Men’s Club of the Congregational Church elected officers for the coming year during the past week. President is Elmer Oistad, Vice-President George Moore, and Secretary-Treasurer Geo Haglund. The club reports active church work and a large membership.

He describes back defects, scoliosis, leg length discrepancy, hearing loss, breath difficulties, vision problems, recurrent pain, poor reading ability, eye alignment trouble, winter foot sores, and past medical care. Mrs Jernee of this city reports from France that Oliver Seaton of the Ashland Machine Gun Company died of pneumonia while serving abroad. A 24 year old recruit among the first to enlist after the U S entered the war, he died defending democracy and the flag. The northern region extends sympathy to his family in their bereavement.

The County Council of Defense hosts a patriotic meeting at the Gem Theatre on Thursday evening March 28. Speakers include S. A. Oscar, former City Schools head and Beavers Reserve Fund head, and Emmet R. Hicks, former Wisconsin Attorney General. Singing will accompany the program as Washburn residents are urged to attend to show loyalty on the war question.

The Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church will host an Easter Supper at the church parlors on Wednesday March 27 at 6 p.m. Tickets priced 385c. M. H. Sprague returned earlier this week from Osage Iowa where he conducted business.
August Kittle, a German Alien, was fined 100 plus costs and sentenced to three months in the county jail for assaulting Bayfield officer McLucas while in custody. He refused to register and attempted to flee the jail after the incident. Municipal Judge George A Calder imposed the penalties.
The Congregational Church schedules church school at 9 45 and regular worship at 11 with special Palm Sunday music and child baptisms. Christian Endeavor meets at 6 30 and a debate asks if there is no remedy for intemperance. Evening service at 7 30. Good Friday service March 29 at 7 30 with preparatory worship.
