A severe two day snowstorm blanketed northern Wisconsin causing rail and road closures for a week. Milk and meat supplies fell to low ebb in Washburn while trains remained stalled and mail service stopped. Cleanup involved a rotary plow from Iowa, crews from Bayfield, and delayed lines into Ashland and Green Bay.
Ashland Inc postpones the farmers course at Ashland Junction due to bad roads. The program runs March 7 to 10 with sessions on dairy rations fruit production spraying abortion in cattle fertilisers silage land clearing and farm building ventilation led by M H Wright W E Brubaker H A Smith and others including J M Walz E J Delwiche and A state veterinarians The agenda includes practical talks on beef dairy crops and farm management.
The Northern State Bank received a limited supply of the new 1922 Peace Dollar coins from the mint. The coins resemble last year’s half and quarter dollars and feature Liberty on the obverse with In God We Trust and 1922, plus designer initial at the neck. The reverse bears United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, One Dollar and Peace. Bankers dislike the new coin for stacking issues.
The past week’s storm caused widespread cancellations from social gatherings to Du Pont Club events. Washburn suffered a severe setback as traffic halted and programs were postponed until streets opened and better weather returned.
The federal reserve board's 1921 annual report notes an upward shift in general industrial and business conditions. It marks a bottom for depression in the latter part of last week and foresees gradual improvement, with banking reacting to sustain the system through low mood, and a severe storm causing three days of school closure before reopening Monday.

Heavy snows three to five feet halt logging in Bayfield County and across Northern Wisconsin. Wacsmuth Lumber of Bayfield, Mellen Lumber at Foster Junction, and Kannia at Ballou shut operations last week, leaving many workers idle. Hauling logs becomes impractical, risking docked timber left in woods until spring thaws or next winter.
City streets were opened for travel as plows could not clear deep drifts. Street crews, led by Foreman Joe Arseneau, shoveled to create walkable routes and even a tunnel on West Third Street. Snow eight to ten feet deep blocked paths, but travel resumed through makeshift pedestrian passages.
S. A. Oscar, Grand Secretary of the Beavers, was due Monday to install local officers and speak on new Beavers insurance forms. He was stalled by a late last week snow storm and remained at Spooner until Monday before returning to Madison.
Bodeen and Company of Port Wing finalized a deal with Bayfield County Farmers and Fruit Growers Association for a carload of tillage harvesters and hay machinery. Delivery is slated around May 10th. The Times notes the procurement was completed last Saturday.
Two marquee games are set for Saturday with the Badger Club hosting Mellen City and the Enterprise All-Stars facing the Houghton Athletic Association five. The Badgers seek revenge after earlier losses while Mellen aims to prove improvement. The Enterprise and Houghton clash follows a lopsided series with both sides eager to settle scores in a heated doubleheader.
Severe coal shortage at the Du Pont plant in Barksdale threatened shutdowns as bunkers emptied and three coal cars stood idle. The Wednesday deadline loomed until Tuesday when the Omaha line opened, permitting a fresh coal delivery and preventing costly shut down and fire pulling.
Jack Smith traveled to Bayfield by dog team over the ice to exchange films with the Bayfield theatre in order to change the Temple Theatre program for the city.
Post Office staff led by Postmaster John O Sullivan sorted and dispatched enormous volumes after a train from Ashland delivered 35 to 50 sacks of first class mail and 108 sacks of other classes. Charles Wisley made five trips to the depot to move the mail while over 100 pounds of first class mail and 83 sacks of other classes were shipped out. The rush followed a weeklong train service tie-up and included the first local mail to Bayfield.
Assemblyman Frank Downs played a joke on his wife and daughter visiting in the Twin Cities during a snow storm. He wrote a long letter claiming warm winds and freed streets and a strawberry patch covering plants, then mailed it. The storm disrupted mail service and the letter stayed at the post office for a week before arriving in St Paul.
City wood orders were paid from a wood fund after the School Board voted to reimburse the cost of wood bought for the schools. The total covered nearly $1700 and the school fund had sufficient money to transfer and settle most bills at the Monday night meeting.
In Washburn a fevered basketball rivalry builds as the Scouts and the High School team prepare for three-game series led by Cush and Albrechtson. The Scouts boast an undefeated record while the High School squad has two losses, to Ashland and Melien, with both sides evenly matched in weight and capable of fast play. The opener at the Du Pont Club on Friday promises a hard fought contest likely to draw large crowds. The Times urges fans to attend for a true test of skill and will to win.
