Reports say Carranza troops engaged a United States scouting party under General Pershing in Mexico. Twelve American soldiers were killed, others wounded or captured, as both sides disengaged after a suspected trap with a machine gun.
D M Maxcy vice president of Bayfield County Bank explains he has been asked to assess a wild bear cub for J I Case Co exhibitions. He must determine if the cub is good natured, will not snap or bite, and stays quiet among crowds, a task beyond his banking duties. He seeks advice on how to evaluate the animal’s disposition.
The S H and E F of A Lodge intends to buy the Norwegian Methodist church on Third street and 3rd avenue west. They plan to turn the building into a lodge hall with repairs soon and may sell the rear residence to fund the project. The strengthened setup will serve as a home for the Scandinavian lodge after renovations.
Aaron Segal and four companions traveled to Ashland in the Segal automobile to see Company L depart for Camp Douglas. The unit will stay a few days before heading to the Mexican border. A large parade accompanied by the band fire department and thousands of citizens escorted them from the Armory to the depot. A birthday party for Mrs. Mary Hansen followed at her home Tuesday afternoon with gifts for the honoree.
Rev. Chris Tiansen will report from Fargo North Dakota where the recent Norwegian Lutheran Church of America meeting concluded with the uniting of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of the United States.
Three Washburn men from Ashland have enlisted in the Ashland National Guard and departed Ashland for Camp Douglas. Harry Robinson Harley E Monk and Percey Larson all DuPont employees at Barksdale will train briefly before moving toward the Mexican border to be ready in case of war.
Ace Willey arrived in Milwaukee on Monday night during a cross country journey from the Pacific coast and plans to reach Washburn tonight or tomorrow. He faced mud on the last leg through Kansas and Iowa but continued at a good pace, reporting an enjoyable trip with ideal weather and no mishaps overall.
Charles F. Morris Alfred Froseth and H. H. Peavy left early this week for Madison to attend a Republican conference to select a Progressive party gubernatorial candidate. They went as delegates from Bayfield county, chosen at a city meeting last week.
State funds a railroad terminal tax payer money to city. City Clerk L N Clausen reports over 1100 received this week, with a total to be 2300 from the state. The balance is expected in October as the State Supreme Court ruled the money should be returned to the city. Funds aid city finances before fall tax collection.
A list of new library books appears including Beach Crimson Gardenia Cooper Drusilla and Tennis titles. The Washburn fire department received a $340 insurance premium bonus from the city clerk, shared by Fire Chief Raymond Hudson among all department members.
Thomas G. Wolley of LaCrosse wins the paving contract for the city and will begin work within a week. Engineer Reichard arrives late this week to set grade stakes and prepare for paving. Expect streets to be torn up during the project.
Clyde Sullivan arrived last Saturday evening from Remont Michigan where he has been attending high school and is visiting with his parents Mr. and Mrs. James Sullivan.
M. H. Sprague of Sprague Lumber travels to northern Michigan to oversee logging on a newly acquired timber tract on Lake Superior. The plan includes building a logging railroad to haul pine, hemlock, and hardwood to be rafted to this city for sprague mill sawmilling. South Shore Lumber expects a prolonged operation and a long mill life for Washburn mill.
DuPont at Barksdale will provide full pay for six months to employees enlisted to go to the Mexican border. The policy covers construction workers and may extend to all plant staff, with the company aiming to protect workers from income loss while serving.
Mrs. Chris Pady departed Monday for St. Peter Minnesota to visit her brother and stay a brief period.
Bayfield county road committee awarded the Salmo area rebuild to G W Wethern of Minnesota at $3500 for grading and $1000 for concrete culverts, while Eben Olson of Port Wing criticized the decision citing rock encountered and lack of a certified check. Olson also won two concrete culvert contracts in Russell and Iron River Port Wing for $350 and $500 respectively, with plans to align the Salmo road to the railway right of way for a steadier grade and wider bed.
Erick LeMone an expert electrician with the electric Light and Power company escaped serious injury Tuesday after contacting a 2800 volt wire while working on a pole thirty feet high on Washington avenue. He jumped freeing his grip and fell into lower wires which cushioned the fall before police and others helped him to safety. He suffered a severe shock and bruises but is lucky to be alive.
A group led by O. A. Lamoreaux and including Charles L. Olson John Gautschi John Gibson and M. E. Doyle spent Sunday through a few days at Murray Lake in Douglas county fishing for bass. They traveled in the Lamoreaux car and found ample room for both men and fish on the return. Weather hindered records though the lake yielded plentiful bass and all enjoyed the trip.
Misses Catherine and Mary Howell departed Wednesday afternoon for Sykeston North Carolina to spend the summer vacation with their parents Mrs George Ogren of DuPont Washington visits in the city with her sister Mrs Oscar Wegsten and friends before continuing to Mason and other points then returning to Washington.
Five DuPont Powder Company employees from Barksdale Washburn will accompany a National Guard deployment called by President Wilson to the Mexican border. Otto G. Zemann of the Third Regiment supply company, W. O. Mulligan of Company I, James Seifer, Ralph Williams, and Dana Richardson have left Superior, Rice Lake, Ashland, and Appleton respectively to join the mission. They may test particles of the powder they helped manufacture.
Mrs. E. Alvord Mrs. George Fox and George A. Calder left Tuesday afternoon for Superior to attend the Beaver Reserve Fund fraternity annual convention in session there.
Rev. A Road returned last Saturday for Galesburg Illinois and Marshalltown where he visited relatives and friends. Nels M. Oscar was in Superior for Beaver convention meetings over the past two days. Mrs J J Sharp left for New York state to spend the summer with relatives and friends. Dr T R Spears and family along with Mr and Mrs Elliison and Mr and Mrs T J Spears drove to Stanley for a week’s visit. Mrs Eady hosted a grandma party with many attendees. A proposed race to find the party’s fastest runner was postponed after discussion. The afternoon was described as pleasant by attendees.
Bayfield County enjoys peace as the jail remains without prisoners. The drys credit the low number of saloons in four towns for the absence of inmates, forcing the county to hire a man to mow jail and courthouse yards.
The Washburn committee reports plans nearly complete for a major 4th of July event with Bayfield joining in. Fundraising shows strong progress with large donations, and about $1000 more is needed to fund the program featuring many events.
The Wisconsin Telephone company informs managers that it will grant full-time status to employees who serve in the National Guard or state militia and pay for time spent at government training camps. The policy aims to aid the nationwide preparedness movement while keeping regular pay for workers on active government duty.
A special meeting will be held at the Library on Tuesday June 27 at 3 o'clock to perfect plans for the upcoming Fourth of July celebration and to finalize arrangements for the Fly campaign. All members and others interested are requested to attend.
The Horticultural Department of the Wisconsin Experiment Station in Madison sets July 1 as the final date to receive application blanks for potato field inspection and certification for the 1916 season. Blanks are circulated and can be furnished on request, with all applications to be mailed to Madison.
Edward Hansen visited with friends at Rice Lake on Tuesday. Attorney C. F. Morris transacted legal business at Iron River on Monday.
