Bayfield county begins a wartime drive Monday to raise 348020 for War Savings stamps. Officials plan district canvassing, schoolhouse meetings, and pledges from every man woman and child. Workers include ward captains, women volunteers, and DuPont plant staff, with stamps yielding 4 percent interest and redeemable in 1923.
The Washburn's new addition Residence Park is selling rapidly with many buyers planning immediate construction, including DuPont employees. The sale continues through Sunday with remaining lots offered through Mr Axelberg. June 15 1918 Washburn Times Bayfield County report.
In Iron River a drunken Tuesday brawl at a road house left John Nelson known as Coffee John with a gunshot wound to the arm. George Hughes of Superior says he fired to frighten Nelson after a fight that also involved Mrs Hughes. Nelson is hospitalized and Hughes jailed after a hearing before Judge Savage.
Barksdale officials are upgrading the road across the Barrons to Iron River and plan an eighteen mile extension across their town. The project removes sharp curves and hills to create a direct county route, with the Iron River end also being improved. Current road conditions are good and maintenance will be light after completion.
The Knights of Pythias from this city held their annual picnic at Long Lake seven miles west of town. Thirty members traveled by auto for a day of meals games and amusements including a big dinner a baseball game a tug of war swimming and contests. The Giants lost the cap game to the White Sox umpire Berman drew playful accusations. Sugar restrictions were publicized urging merchants and customers to observe new limits and to use permits for further purchases.
Secretary McAdoo issued a telegram via A R Rogers Ninth District Director urging bondholders not to exchange Third Liberty Loan bonds for doubtful securities or merchandise. He praised investment aims and condemned use of bonds for nonfinancial exchanges while noting merchants may still accept them for goods. The note emphasizes bonds should be kept for permanent investment to support wartime conservation and Liberty Loan goals.
A letter from Burnice Kurschner in France to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Nick Kurschner describes his first airplane ride and a fond view of France. He serves in the 1st Aero Division of the U S Army, enlisted five months ago, and has been in France about five weeks. Also noted is the birth of a baby girl to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Pallage on Friday, June 14.
War update notes the 32nd Division, including Wisconsin units, is fighting on German soil in Alsace under Major General William G. Haan. Washburn and Bayfield county soldiers, such as the 207th Military Police and 107th Supply, are in the division and near the front, with Bayfield men expected to see action soon.
The War Department explains that casualty lists from France reach relatives within 24 hours of receipt. A statistical division maintains files with each soldier’s name, unit, and designated emergency contact. Telegrams are prepared from ready blanks and dispatched swiftly, though delays can occur from clerical errors, address changes, or Pershing withholding lists for security.
The Congregational Church holds Sunday school at 9 45 and regular worship in Ho clock. Sermon topic is A Go Who Counts with a Christian Endeavor prayer meeting at 7 p m. Midweek Prayer and Conversation is set for Wednesday 8 to 9. O W Smith reports Rev A Road of the Swedish Lutheran church has been offered charge of the Children's Orphan Home at Duluth. Mr and Mrs Geo T Fox depart for St Paul to attend the National Optometrist convention and a Post Graduates meeting while away.
Local youths from prominent families are accused of firing at objects on the lake shore and stealing a row boat. Witnesses saw them shoot a lock off a boat tied to a pier. the boys fled but were later identified. Adults threaten warrants for concealed weapons, breaking locks and boat theft. Reports also allege dynamite house locks shot off. authorities would harshly act if found. Mr and Mrs Frank Hoover of Chetek visited the city at their son Fred Hoover's home and attended the G A R convention at Ashland.
