ROOTS OF CORN UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS

The study by A. M. Ten Eyck shows corn roots grow deeper and access more soil than Kaffir corn or sorghum. Do not cultivate so deep as to damage large lateral roots at about four inches. Level planted roots sit closer to surface. listed corn tolerates deeper last cultivations, while level planted requires careful proximity to the hill. In hot dry climates deep last cultivation and a thick soil mulch conserve moisture.
