Salt Lake Herald reports Harry Wards Minstrels opened at the Grand to a large audience with features including nine year old prodigy Carl Fletcher, the Columbian tour quartette, acrobats Manuro and Parks in A Night in the Jungle, and new comedians. Fire destroyed the dope house at the Eastern Dynamite plant below the city on Monday morning. The structure, used for mixing soda and sulphur with pulp wood for dynamite, has burned previously in two to three years. The plant shut briefly but is back in operation, with plans to rebuild the building at once.
Bids for placing riprap on the Ashland breakwater and removing existing slabs were opened by Major Gorman in Duluth last Thursday. The Northern Dredge Co. offered the low bid of 97 cents per ton, but no award was made as bids go to Washington for approval. Over 60,000 tons of stone are needed, likely sourced from the company’s local quarry or from Houghton, with employment for many workers for about two years.

Register of Deeds Nels Myhre filed a 6 000 000 mortgage by the Superior Iron and Chemical Company of Michigan and Wisconsin to the Union Trust Company of Detroit. It is described as the largest mortgage in Bayfield County history, covering steel plants blast furnaces chemical plants and multiple land types as security for bonds to be issued.
A laborer named Steve Thompson fractured his leg when stone fell at the quarry above the city last Friday. He was taken to the city hospital where the injury was dressed and he is progressing as well as could be expected.
The Nash Lumber company saw mill at Shanagolden near Mellen was destroyed by fire last week. It was a large mill valued around 50 000 dollars and fully insured. The firm likely will rebuild on its timber holdings.
