Narrow escape at the coal dock saves sailor from drowning

Harry Simpson of the Amazonas nearly died after falling between a boat and the coal dock while drunk. Steward James Earle rescued him and got him aboard to dry off. The incident occurred during unloading at a busy harbor as the tide ran strong. Tim Keefe shines in Mitchell baseball notes.

Mrs. Mary Olson formerly Miss Mary Anderson died at her Washburn home after months of illness from consumption. Funeral at Congregational Church Sunday drew large crowds with five secret societies in attendance. Interment in Washburn cemetery. End of smallpox scare in Washburn ends with no new cases

After ten months and 310 cases in Washburn with two deaths, the last patient was discharged last Thursday by Dr. Mertens. No new cases have appeared, signaling the disease may be over and public alarm has eased.

Pioneer settler Ervin Leihy dies at 79 in Bayfield County

Ervin Leihy, a longtime Bayfield County pioneer and prominent figure in the region, died last Friday at age seventy nine. The funeral Sunday drew many attendees from Ashland and other areas. Leiby had settled in Bayfield more than thirty years ago after marrying at La Pointe in 1851.

Children’s Day Services at Congregational Church

Next Sabbath at the Congregational Church marks Children’s Day with morning Knights of Pythias present, Mr. Gibson preaching, the choir singing an anthem, and Mr. Holt performing a solo.
