Evart Sten Drowns Swimming Near Sprague Docks

Evart Sten 21, son of Mr and Mrs I J Sten of Washburn and a member of Company B National Guards, drowned while swimming near Sprague Sten docks. He followed Raymond Smith across a slip, called for help, sank in about fourteen feet of water, and was recovered after nearly two hours. Funeral set for 2 p.m. at the Norwegian Lutheran church with viewing prior.

Death of longtime resident Frank Smith at Severson residence

Frank Smith aged 57 died Sunday after an illness of stomach and heart trouble. He had worked as a clerk at the Arcade pool hall in the past year or two and was a single man well liked by friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Severson residence with Rev. Goodrich of the Methodist church officiating, interment in Woodland cemetery.

Miss Eva Emmett Wycoff will present a song recital at the Congregational church on Thursday July 26. The performance features a soprano voice of great volume and sweetness with a varied programme likely to appeal to music lovers.

The County Council of Defense backs business interests and farmer groups as Bayfield county plans to grow silos. An estimated 82 silos in January 1917 will rise substantially due to the campaign.

Two Injured In Iron River Road Collision

Mrs. C E Ballard of Thief River Falls Minnesota formerly Dora Kearns of this city was seriously injured and others were cut and bruised when a car driven by Ballard and another driven by Emil Scantland collided on a bend two miles from Iron River Tuesday afternoon. Both cars were speeding and threw occupants from the vehicles. Ballard party returned to this city on the late train Wednesday evening while the Scantland party continued to Duluth by rail.

Change in Management at Wisconsin Cafe and Lamoreaux Hotel

Over the past week Wisconsin Cafe is now run by J. Carl Davis of Minneapolis and C. E. K. Baker of Jamestown N D. Baker also oversees the Lamoreaux Hotel dining room. Both properties have seen many changes as managers promise first class service with high patronage. Wisconsin Cafe offers meals and lunches at all hours while Lamoreaux Hotel serves meals only on the European plan.
