Candidacy Formed For State Senator in Twelfth District

Attorneys A Pearce Tomkins and Victor Pierellee announce candidacy for the Republican nomination in Wisconsin’s Twelfth Senatorial district covering Ashland Bayfield Price Sawyer Taylor and Washburn counties. Senator Sanborn will not seek reelection. The field also includes Parkinson who declined.

Wisconsin Democratic candidates chosen for September primary

At the Wisconsin Democratic state convention in Milwaukee candidates were named for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and state treasurer. The nominees include A J Schmitz, John C Karel, H W Molenpaugh, H W Bolens, J F Doherty, C A Catling, Nicholas Schmidt Wansau, and Jacob Leonard. The convention rejected repeal of the income tax but urged amendments to remove aggressive features and improve fairness.

Train Wreck at Grandview Injures Dozen. Two Expected to Die

A work train on the Superior and South eastern railroad derailed at Grandview damaging the end spur. Thirty men rode the cars, many jumped clear while others were trapped. Chas Boltrus and Agram Dunwreyse are among the seriously injured. A. Anderson suffers rib fractures but is recovering. Doctors from Ashland treated the wounded.

Methodist Conference Elects Church Officers

The quarterly Methodist conference in this area met Monday evening led by District Superintendent J. H. Irish. About forty attended as plans for the year were set and officers were elected including Clerk M. S. Hull Treasurer H. C. Koenig Trustees-EI C. Koenig Gus Anderson Ned Wieman Robert Urquhart M. S. Hull Wm. Philbrick Wm. Carson and B. Berglund. The current Stewarts were reelected and a supper was served.

Bayfield County Fair premium book details and prizes

The 1912 Bayfield County Fair premium books will be distributed later this week. The new book is larger with a Grand Sweepstake prize for the best town exhibit and several special prizes including best farm display. The fair aims for a standard county list and better crop varieties, with experienced superintendents and enlarged fair grounds plus a dining hall serving hot meals.

Bids Awarded For 8th Street Sewer Project

A meeting of the Board of Public Works opened bids from Andrew Johnson and Mike Larson for the 8th street sewer. Larson offered 1.03 per foot and 59 per manhole, Johnson 1.04 and 55. The committee awarded to Mike Larson and work began today. Sewer runs from 3rd avenue west to 8th avenue west.

Road Commissioner Eben Olson accompanied by officials visited the city in the latter part of last week for business discussions and formalities.

County road work in Bayfield under fire from state

County Board of Bayfield meets to ratify bond sale while road work draws fire from Wisconsin Highway Commission. Officials report highly unsatisfactory work with plans lacking and warn that funds spent from general fund and bond issue may be illegal. Commission withholds $2556 state aid and will hold county officials accountable if plans are not approved.

Pictures of Apostle Islands Start United States Airing

A thirteen person Essanay film crew arrives in Ashland to shoot pictures of Apostle Islands scenery. The company will produce plays using Lake Superior backgrounds and distribute them nationwide over the next three weeks.
