Crowds packed Ashland streets as saloons shut for a year amid a celebratory mood. Police struggled to maintain order while jail cells filled. vendors dumped stock early and hoped for a lasting dry outcome. Chequamegon Bay towns face renewed abstinence with Iron River as the only distant option.
In a patriotic meeting last week residents of the former German Settlement in Eileen voted to rename the area Woodland Settlement. The community subscribed 1250 in War Savings Stamps achieving a full 100 percent pledge. A final note lauds the effort as spirited with a woman selling chickens to reach the goal.
Miss Rose Shoresman daughter of Mr and Mrs C A Shoresman will leave here for Washington D C soon. She has accepted a position in the government offices and will report for duty the 8th of July.

William Lindsay arrived back early this week from Texas where he served in Captain Peavey’s Bayfield County company. He was discharged for ill health but reports his condition has greatly improved after a long stay in the south. Recent rainfall over the weekend aided dry ground but more rain is needed for crops.
Gray, Robinson and Company of Manitowoc were awarded the job to lay nine blocks of sewer on Omaha Street and extend up 3rd Avenue East. City officials signed the contract after representatives visited last week, with equipment due to arrive this week to begin work. The sewer runs from Omaha Street and Washington Avenue up Omaha Street to Third Avenue East and then up 4th Street, serving new residences and linking with future sewers in the DuPont Park Addition.
The library expanded greatly last month with 250 new volumes including fiction travel war for children and farmer topics such as Home waterworks a manual on water supply farm crop production silo building and garden profitability. Oscar Palm stationed at Camp Robinson near Sparta visited relatives over the weekend. He serves in the heavy artillery squad and is rapidly learning to sight the large U S Army guns. Palm was a crack shot with a rifle and may become a feared marksman if he masters the big guns.
Swedish Lutheran Church A Road at Pastor Washington Ave and 4th St announces services through July with confirmations and times in Ashland Washburn Bayfield events on July 7 14 21 and 28 including 10 30 a m 8 00 p m and 7 30 p m sessions.
Mr and Mrs C N Amble formerly of Colfax now of Minneapolis travel with Mrs Carolina Lee of Minneapolis in Amble s new Buick. They drove 180 miles from Colfax to Washburn in ten hours with stops at Rice Lake Spooner Hayward for dinner arriving at 5 30 and report some roads very bad. They are visiting Mr and Mrs Nels Lee in this city.
Old veteran Joseph Stevens plans a July 4 birthday gathering at his eastside home for about thirty five Grand Army of the Republic members from Ashland Washburn and Bayfield. The Civil War veterans will enjoy dinner and an afternoon of stories and reminiscences.
Washburn state officials report a decisive movement in funding with approval nearing the top end of proposals. County reports indicate delays and slow receipt of funds as discussions continue between local commissioners and state agencies.
A Saturday night incident in Grandview near Sweden reports farmer Martin Johnson abducted from his home and tarred and feathered over alleged disloyal remarks about the Government and Red Cross. Authorities received little clue to the attackers, who used a fishing spot for the act.
Deputy Organizer O’Brien of Ashland helped form a new Teamsters Union in the city last Tuesday evening. Twenty one members signed up at the meeting, with Washburn’s large teamsters expected to swell the ranks soon. Elected officers included President Victor Bergquist Vice President Raymond Hudson Secretary E R Fahrig and Treasurer Herbert Ross.
The Times reports an advance in its annual subscription to 2.00 dollars starting July 1 due to war induced costs in labor, paper, inks, postage, and freight. It notes pre war prices since 1914 and says many daily papers have raised rates for the same reasons.
Mrs. Vernon Lucas made a trip to Ashland last Thursday. The report notes her travel and reference to the city visit in a concise item.

Charles Olson, two weeks into treatment in Rochester Minnesota, shows steady progress and expects to remain a few more weeks. Earlier he broke an arm and has since recovered slowly, now doing as well as could be expected. Scott Ellis of Ashland sustained severe injuries in an automobile accident Saturday evening with a doubtful recovery. the driver was not blamed for the incident.
Bayfield county men and registrants head to Columbus Barracks for July 5 1918 training. Contingents of 25, 22, and 92 leave in July with routes and timings to be decided on training day. Names include Eddie Anderson Marshall Alaska Victor Anderson Minneapolis and Carl Swanson South Minneapolis among others. Holgren grocery on Bayfield Street robbed Monday evening. $4 left in register. reward of ten dollars offered. several city stores have suffered recent break ins.
Bayfield County Federal Food Administrator Swenson warns the public of new sugar allotments after July 1. Class A to 50 percent for some groups, Class B unchanged except added retailers, Class C includes public eating places with three pounds per ninety meals, Class D at seventy percent for June July August September, and retailers three pounds per person per month. Officials urged broad publicity and meetings with retailers bakers and eating‑place keepers for understanding duties. Forms for new classes C D E to be issued.
The Young People's Society of the Norwegian Lutheran church presents a program on Wednesday July 10 at 8 P M featuring vocal solos by Christina Lund and Muriel Grey, organ solo by Ruth Berge, piano solo by Mrs A B Christiansen, readings by Esther Swanson, a violin and guitar duet by Leonard Hanson and Gust Thorsell, a song by the Junior Choir, and a violin solo by Vivian Paulson with Roy Christiansen as president.

If weather is favorable the annual outing or open air service will be held at the old picnic grounds next Sunday otherwise services as usual with English service in the evening. Ladies Aid society and Y. P. S. meet at the church Wednesday entertained by Mrs. Gilbert Olson. The Y. P. S. have a fine program Prayer meeting Tuesday evening. There will be no services at Engoe next Sunday.
Mrs Ray T Crowell of this city learned Tuesday that her husband has reached France and is serving in the army since last December. Edgar Goode bought Jack Joanis Elgin Six automobile.
