Ashland stage big homecoming includes a popular voting contest for the two counties. Ladies entry includes Phyllis Goedeke of Washburn. Prizes total 500 in gold and liberty bonds. Contest closes Saturday night July 12. Ten votes cost ten cents. Ten prizes awarded at the homecoming grounds Saturday night.
Residents report heavy foot traffic of cars every evening as crowds flock to Long Lake nine miles west of the city for enjoyable bathing. Despite Chequemegon Bay being a bit cold, visitors praise Long Lake as the finer swimming option this hot week.
Washburn residents are invited to a big dance at the Deng Lake Grange hall on Saturday evening. George Bourgeois suffered a broken bone in his wrist from a fall from a swing on Tuesday.
Bayfield county and residents hosted a multi day homecoming for soldiers and sailors from Bayfield county who served in World War I. The celebration featured parades, Red Cross meals, Y M C A services, band music, decorations, and athletic events. One thousand plus attended a lake shore picnic while Iron River sent a special train. Honor badges were delayed but will be mailed to all veterans.
Assemblyman Frank Downs returned from Madison and spent time with family while attending to district affairs. He has a long attendance record at Madison and has been diligent on the job during the session.
Jack Green of Ashland spent Sunday in the city visiting friends and strolling through the downtown area with a group of companions.
Iron River announces a Friday July 4 homecoming event for western Bayfield County. Washburn City Band will play and Captain Peavey will speak. A free soldiers banquet at six p.m. precedes an evening dance with sports and games throughout the day. Townsfolk urged to attend.
The Ashland homecoming committee plans a week of events including ball games races and parades. Con T Kennedy shows, touted as the largest on the road, bring 85 cars with 20 big shows 4 riding devices 2 bands 50 concessions and 485 people arriving from Ishpeming Michigan to perform daily from Monday 7 p.m. onward.
A young man hid a pint bottle of whiskey under a plank, but a finder took it. Another person later stashed a quart there, and the first man returned to find the quart already gone and took it as well.
Sunday at five o clock a diner party in honor of Homer Posey who has returned from service overseas. Attending were Mr and Mrs Doyle Mrs Picott and son Alfred Mr and Mrs Alex Gackowski Mrs H Lafreniere of Ashland Mr and Mrs Homer Posey and son DeAlton of Superior Mr and Mrs E Schultheis Mr and Mrs Aldrich and Mr and Mrs Nap Fortier Rev and Mrs D W Davis left last week for Ohio to visit Mr Davis mother.
The Cornucopia celebration opens at sunrise and runs through the night with a full program of amusements and events. Tickets and meals are available as locals are invited to attend, with chairman Nigard urging visitors to “Hit the trail across the Barrons.”
Fr Hyacinth accompanied M E Doyle on a Bayfield trip when a car wheel slipped into a rut. He injured two ribs in the mishap and later delivered an address at the court house services for soldier boys with difficulty. An X ray confirmed the two broken ribs.

A 1919 letter from Andre Reynaud Cleyet, a Paris orphans student, thanks Madam for her help and likens her to his father figure. The note arrived through Miss Julia Bartness for the Four Mile Creek and Froseth schools in Chambery, France.
