Surprise Twenty Fifth Anniversary Held At Odd Fellows Hall

Mr and Mrs C A Shoresman were honored with a surprise silver gifts anniversary party at Odd Fellows Hall organized by the Lady Maccabees and Rebekahs for their 25th wedding anniversary. The event featured cards games luncheon and a silver percolator tray and chafing dish presented by D W Corning. The couple has resided in the city most of the past twenty three years and is highly esteemed locally. A farewell party for Ernest Arseneau Rudolph Arseneau and George Burke was held at Mrs Gilbert Olsons residence with luncheon and friends prior to their departure for Vancouver Barracks. A lost pocketbook from a Cornucopia visitor was recovered after an advertisement and reward published in the paper.

Waco Injury Delays Soldier as Letters Reach Home

A letter from William DeMars in Waco Texas describes an accident that left him with a broken ankle after a motor truck ran over his leg. He will be laid up five to six weeks and hopes to join his company in France once fit. He asks friends to write and support him during recovery. Miss Muriel Stapleton and Arthur Cease wed in Daluth with Rev. Staub officiating. The Methodist Brotherhood elected 1917 officers and arranged a concert with violinist Prof. G N Howard for February.

Len ton season events at Garden Hall teased with masquerade

Bayview Town Board extends tax due date to March 1 1918 as Harvey Irish town clerk records resolution. Meanwhile Garden Hall announces two final Len ton season events a masquerade on Friday February 8 and a chocolate dance Monday February 11 with free chocolates all evening. The hall features a glass floor and the notices urge remembering the dates.

Young Men Enlist Voluntarily for Spruce Division Service

Washburn and Bayfield men flock to the Spruce Division of the Signal Corps joining voluntary induction for World War II effort. A batch of twenty six sails to Vancouver Barracks WA, with others already departing, as food ration rules tighten nationwide and War Savings campaigns begin in Wisconsin.

Washburn seeks 400 dollars for War Camp Recreation Fund

A community drive in Washburn requests 400 dollars for the War Camp Community Recreation Fund. Committee chair W A Robinson and members Ike Berman Selmer Haugen A C MacPherson and Carl Holman will raise the amount by Feb 15 1918. The fund supports camp environment recreation welfare and social activities near training camps, distinct from YMCA and Knights of Columbus efforts.

Sword of Lt John McKay Returns to Bayfield County Court House

The sword carried by Lt John McKay of Company K during the Spanish American War has been recovered and will be housed in the Bayfield County Court House. D M Maxey and others had sought its return with Léver Lier of Grand Marais aiding the search. John W Gibson delivered the relic from northern Minnesota. If seen in years to come, the sword will recall Lt McKay who disappeared years ago in Lake Superior near Grand Marais.

All Navy enlistments now are for the war period. Young men hesitating over four years can join under wartime terms and help the country. After training, enlistees may be sent abroad on battleships with chances for action. The Navy seeks apprentice seamen firemen wireless operators and tradesmen for aviation. O'Sullivan Brothers Join Army En Route to Jefferson Barracks

Bernard O'Sullivan son of the city postmaster and Mrs. O'Sullivan left Monday for Jefferson Barracks Missouri to join the Engineering Corps. He is the second O'Sullivan to depart for the front as Toby left earlier for the east to aid in the war effort.

Miss Evelyn Laura Olson daughter of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Olson married Sidney Robert Lebo in Russborough Saskatchewan Canada on January 23 1918. Washburn friends send congratulations and best wishes to the couple. Ingvald Syke visited friends in Duluth and Superior over Sunday.

Y M C A Drive in Bayfield County Big Success

A Bayfield County Y M C A campaign report shows a total collection of 4082.06 during the 1917 drive. Funds will support Army camps, battlefields in France and Belgium, and soldiers and sailors, with major contributions from Bayfield, Bayview, Cable, Drummond, Iron River, Port Wing, Washburn, DuPont employees, and others.

Funeral for William Soshea Held in City

The funeral service for William Soshea was held Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church. He died Friday en route to the Du Pont plant, age 57, survived by wife and six children. He had lived in Washburn and Odanah, later returning to Washburn where he worked as a foreman at J. S. Stearns Lumber. The death was attributed to heart failure and the family received ample sympathy.
