County School Board Convention Draws Local Attendance

The County School Board Convention and Teachers Institute met in this city last Friday and Saturday with about one hundred attendees. Pres. McCaskill of the Superior State Normal School spoke on How to be Miserable, and W H Hunt discussed state graded schools. The event featured questions, discussions, a lunch by the Domestic Science department, and Victrola music.

Go to Church Sunday observance urged statewide

The Go to Church Sunday movement scheduled for February 7 urged all denominations to invite lapsed attendees to visit a church that day. Special services are planned across the city and attendees are promised a welcoming atmosphere. A Boy Scout dinner on February 2 aims to raise funds for uniforms, priced at 25 cents.

Red Hot Campaign for Membership in Washburn Commercial Club

Seven teams of eight members each scour the city to recruit new members for the Washburn Commercial Club. The goal is over 100 members within a two week drive launched at a recent meeting. Initiation is $3 with six months dues. annual dues are $6. Be a booster join now.

True Blue Pie Social at Methodist church planned

The True Blue class of the Methodist Sunday school will host a Pie Social at the church parlors on Friday evening. Ladies are asked to bring a pie for display and auction. Refreshments including coffee and sandwiches will be served.

Bayfield Plans No Licence Campaign This Spring

Bayfield will wage a no licence campaign this spring to rid the city of saloons amid similar efforts expected in Ashland Iron River and other towns The move suggests Bayfield County is rapidly drying up with towns likely to join the dry column and leave the county largely without alcohol venues.

Mill Runs Double Shift at Kenfield Plant

The Kenfield Lamoreaux saw mill began operating on a double shift Monday night to handle fast stock intake. The plant will run 24 hours to meet bolt material demand for the company factory, a welcome development for workers and local business during a slow season.

Washburn Naval Militia to Join Panama Canal Voyage

Three members of the Washburn Naval Militia two ordinary seamen and an officer will travel with United States battleship crews through the Panama Canal in late February. Hjalmer Overby is the only Militia member committed so far. All expenses are paid, with rail travel to the Atlantic, naval deployment, Atlantic crossing, canal transit, Pacific voyage to San Francisco for the Panama Exposition, then return by rail over six weeks.

Warden Transferred Within DuPont System

Guy Warden, longtime DuPont employee at Hibbing Minnesota, has been reassigned to the Hopewell Virginia plant. He is currently at Haskell New Jersey for a short interim period before moving to Virginia. Mrs Warden will visit her parents in this city for a month before joining him in Chicago en route to the East.

Washburn W C T U to push legal action on liquor and gambling

The Washburn W C T U states it will begin proper lawful proceedings against persons selling intoxicating liquor or involved in gambling once sufficient evidence is provided. It asks not to be pressed to start action if individuals are unwilling to testify.

G F Champney of New York state plans a new Washburn creamery ready for business by March 1. He will collect milk and cream twice weekly in winter and as needed in summer, pay top prices, use electric power with a small steam plant, and rely on farmer goodwill without contracts to build steady patronage.

Nelson Dewey Defeats Washburn in 35 to 14 Upset

Nelson Dewey high school trounced Washburns five in Superior. captain Horst led scoring with seven field goals and one foul, Erickson added six fouls and a basket. Dewey has faced top northern Wisconsin teams and will meet Cathedral Duluth next week.
