The Bayfield County Board delays a proposed million dollar bond for county road improvements and rejects a plan to add mileage to the county secondary system. The board favors a definite road program and funding tied to a trunk system fed by town roads, while salaries and office changes are approved.
A joint anniversary party was held Thursday evening January 15 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Fraser. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. Fraser celebrated their wedding anniversaries with many friends in attendance and a luncheon served. The event marked a notable gathering of Washburn’s respected citizens with hopes for many more happy returns.
The annual stockholders meeting on January 13 elected directors M. H. Sprague F. W. Downs L. N. Clausen A. I. Lien B. Ungrodt. Officers named include President M. H. Sprague Vice President L. N. Clausen Cashier S. J. Tisugen Assistant Cashier H. F. Hasson.
Alice Adeline Holte aged 14 years and 3 months died January 19 after a long illness with pulmonary trouble. Funeral from the Norwegian Lutheran church Friday afternoon at 2:60 o'clock. Interment in Woodland cemetery.
The Beaver Fraternal Association of Madison elected to take over Bayfield County bonds totaling 43,000 at par. The board plans to sell the issue to the organization and use the proceeds to fund county highway construction along Route No 10 as part of state and federal trunk line projects.
Ten acres of Florida sunshine join Minnesota winter as the Twin City Automobile Exposition opens at the Overland Building Midway January 31 February 7. Five shows car passenger and commercial vehicles tractors and industrial displays fill five floors under one roof with music lights and dancing to welcome visitors from across the region. Hotels will be crowded and the Northwest is invited to Come On In for eight days of spectacle.
Swedish Lutheran Church announces service times with locations in Ashland Washburn and Bayfield. Services on January 18 and January 25 include 10:30 a.m. sessions and 7:30 p.m. events as listed.
Chester Kinney age 27 son of Mr and Mrs James Kinney of this city died after an oil field accident near Burkburnett Texas He enlisted in the army to serve during the war and returned home to a peaceful career cut short by a crow bar mishap while operating a rotary drill Kinney died on the operating table in Wichita Falls after being rushed there for treatment His funeral was held at the Kinney residence and he is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Washburn.
A Washburn Cemetery Association meeting at the Commercial Club organized the group. L. N. Clausen was temporary chairman Rev. G. H. Waters the temporary secretary. Directors elected: Mrs. A. Faulk Nels Myhre one year L. N. Clausen G. H. Waters two years Amos M. Hansen W. A. Robinson three years. The board will plan to take over the present cemetery and beautification program.
The lodge installed the newly elected officers on Tuesday evening with Grand Lecturer Libby assisting and delivering a talk on the order. A large attendance enjoyed a delightful banquet that followed the ceremony.
The Johnson children Mr and Mrs Carl Lindstrom thank friends and neighbors for assistance comfort and floral offerings during the bereavement after the death of their father Herman Johnson.
Tax notice announces that the 1919 Bayview tax roll is in collection and payable at the official office before March 1 1920. After that date unpaid taxes will be collected as prescribed by law at August F Hoffmann's abstract office every Saturday 9 am to 4 pm. Dated January 14 1920.
After training in France, Chester Kinney and George Berge planned to study oil in Texas. While working there, he met his death, leaving a young, ambitious man mourned by family and friends in the city.
A letter from the assessor praises Bayfield County officers for strict real and personal property valuations. It lists districts and assessors with their percentage of assessment to true value, notes sixteen of twenty six districts show proper assessment, and explains state trends and reductions tied to the DuPont plant in Barksdale.
Commercial Club hosts a Monday evening banquet at the YMCA for County Board members and city colleagues. Seventy attendees enjoyed a three course chicken dinner served by Wisconsin Cafe, followed by a motion picture show and bowling. Local arrangements provided hotel accommodations for visiting members.
The Y M C A announces a belt stretching bowling contest by January 29. Captains must ensure all team members attend as places are prepared for every participant and Mr Manville will oversee the event at the belt battle.
At a meeting of the newly elected directors Wednesday afternoon officers were elected with C. F. Paul as president and A. I. Lien as vice president. The secretary-treasurer post was left vacant to be filled at a subsequent meeting Monday evening next week.
Madison advices indicate a statewide closed deer season this fall pending Wisconsin legislature action. Northern Wisconsin hunters oppose the move backing a one buck law over a closed season.
