Fourth Lecture Night Promises Fine Operatic Entertainment

Tonight at the Congregational church the Men’s Club presents the fourth number of the lecture course featuring the International Operatic company. The program includes vocal solos duets and quartets and a production titled The Sleeping Queen or The Second Act of Martha. The company roster includes Telka Farm Rose Heindenreich J Allen Grubb Burt McKinnie and Margaret Day.

Washburn Artists Entertain With Rare Treat

The company of artists has received high praise for their entertainment. Washburn residents are urged to attend as a rare treat is promised. Single tickets are priced at 50 cents.

Pinafore Operetta Staged by Public School Pupils

An eight male and three female cast with a large chorus will perform Pinafore fore' on Monday evening February 23. Miss Halberg trains the pupils. The comic opera benefits the High School Athletic Association and promises to be very interesting.

Harvey Demars Heads to St Paul for Auto Course

Harvey Demars left Monday for St Paul to study electric starting and lighting systems for automobiles. He will also attend the Minneapolis auto show while away. Dr T Buzad stayed home for a few days with lagrippe, as did the M S Hull family who all battled the winter illness except M S who claims he has not had a bout.

Three Day Institute Promises Broad Community Program

Community institute in Washburn scheduled for February 2 to 4, conducted with the University of Wisconsin Extension Division. Features include business talks by Mr. Jackson and Mr. Linton, children's activities, farm demonstrations, and daily meetings in schools and theaters with motion pictures. Bowling contests at the DuPont plant and a multi-venue program with local speakers, agronomists, and women’s lectures planned. complete program to be released next week.

Paving Engineer Hired for City Plan

Mayor Bryan and City Clerk Clausen announce the hiring of W. A. Reichardt as consulting engineer for next summer’s paving project. Plans will be issued, bids invited for five paving types, and property owners will decide the paving type with city council fallback if needed. Bayfield street expansion includes widening walks and conduit for future street lighting. A fire and water disaster at Doyle dry goods store caused about 3000 in loss, fully insured on stock but uninsured for house contents.

Progressive Republicans Name Delegates in Wisconsin District

At Ashland Wisconsin on January 15 progressive Republicans of the Eleventh district met at ex Senator Sanborns office to pick delegates for the National convention. La Follette was named first choice with substitutes listed if Lenroot or others cannot accept. Ex Senator Sanborn was designated as a delegate at large. The meeting chose F M Thomas as chairman and Pierce Tompkins as secretary.

Minister Attends Lijmen Conference in Duluth

Rev H L Goodrich of the Methodist church left yesterday for Duluth to attend the Lijmen Conference. The conference began Wednesday evening and runs through Friday evening with many renowned pastors and missionaries from around the country in attendance.

Aetna Explosives Plant Damaged by Fire Near Hunington

The Aetna Explosive company plant ten miles east of Hunington Pennsylvania suffered a fire today causing about 15000 dollars in losses including unfinished powder and machinery. Investigators doubt arson and cite careless work by inexperienced labor.

Mrs. W A Binson has lagrippe this week. James Cooke, F T Beers Club candidate in the automobile subscription contest, is in line for a capitol prize. He has united support from club members and city residents hoping for a big touring car.

Visitors to Washburn Electric Light and Power Co. see a 3 inch steel shell casing similar to Allied artillery rounds. F W Downs says it has Triton powder and a time fuse, taken about six months to obtain. Some observers mull deer hunting if state limits permit.

Ike Berman the clothing merchant engages repairs to his Kinney Block store. Windows are being upgraded for better display, lighting revised, and ceilings and walls repainted to modernize the shop. F T Beers of DuPont Powder Works returned from an eastern business trip.
