Omaha's local yards required an extra crew to handle increased coal shipments amid cold weather. Northwestern Fuel loaded 35 to 50 cars daily last week, while dock work employed 25 to 40 men. With better weather, night shifts may ease the burden, but cold snaps slow engine power and sustain heavy demand through winter.

The Knights of Pythias lodge held an open installation at the Odd Fellows ball on Tuesday evening with members and friends in attendance. Light refreshments followed the ceremonies and a pleasant evening was enjoyed by all present.
The dynamite plant, partially closed last week due to a freeze, resumed operations this morning. Extreme cold can freeze pipelines, causing sections of the plant to shut down until repairs are completed.
Taxpayers face two percent collection fees as towns stride to align with a new law. Only Eileen town set aside a treasurer salary fund, while Washburn and others rely on fees. City and district attorneys dispute when the salary statute takes effect and whether two percent fees may be charged.
H. M. Ward has come back from a trip to Indiana and Illinois. He notes the weather was very cold in that region and he was glad to return to his home area.
Washburn hosts a large meeting at the Commercial Club to form an athletic association for men and young men. Hiram Hanson is president, William Hamilton secretary, Herbert Mertz treasurer. A three-man board will direct, with dues set low, plans for a gymnasium, and teams in basketball baseball and football. An organ meeting January 27 will finalize details as equipment is installed next Tuesday evening.
The church schedules a 10 30 morning service on Egypt quest and an evening prohibition rally with State Sec Tayntor. Sunday school is at 12 00 with adult class studying Shailer Mathews Social Gospel and questions on the kingdom of God.
Johnson Maki and Jones, celebrated Colored singers and musicians, will perform at the Orpheum theatre next Wednesday evening and provide music for a dancing party at Garden hall the same night. Tickets for the dance are 50 cents. The troupe has appeared here many times and always given the best of satisfaction.
Walter Marsh anticipates leaving on Monday for Swift Current Saskatchewan where he expects to start employment.
Northern Wisconsin highway officials met at Ashland with Arthur R. Hirst chief engineer to align plans for 1912 road construction. State funds of 1,097,940 will build 632 miles across 501 towns, mostly dirt and stone macadam with county commissioners directing local work.
Wisconsin Anti Tuberculosis Association headquarters in Milwaukee oversees Red Cross Christmas seal returns. Campaign Manager Otto F Bradley says totals likely exceed last year, noting gains in 115 towns and 57 towns offset by declines in 58 towns. Public and parochial schools and charities contributed, with more campaign managers and rural school sales.
Halvor Olson of Bircklake was in the city Sunday and Monday to handle business and visit his brother. With warmer weather, forest work in the vicinity can proceed more satisfactorily, as cold weather had allowed the construction of excellent ice roads. With favorable conditions, work will resume at a rush.
North Star Tent 4 Knights of the Maccabees and Northern Light Hive 27 joined in a joint installation at Johnson hall on Monday evening. P. J. Bestler and Mrs Belle Pederson served as installing officers for the men and ladies. A dancing party followed at Garden Hall with ample refreshments. The order plans a class of twelve at the next meeting.
The Wisconsin experiment stations guide farmers to practical yield gains with low-cost methods. Supt. Delwiche at Ashland opened a sub-station to convert sticky red clay into productive soil, lifting yields from 25 to 33 bushels per acre of wheat, peas at 23 bushels and Scotch peas to 35 bushels, with value rising.
Tom F. Walsh of Montana and City Attorney John Walsh will speak at Fargo banquet this evening. Other speakers include William J. Bryan Judson Harmon Martin Wade Gov Edwin Norris and Charles Heffner. The gathering is described as one of the Northwests most distinguished Democratic meetings. The event marks the opening gun for the Northwest campaign.
Under the semester system public schools admit new students twice yearly in September and January. Beginners class resumes Monday January 22 and parents should enroll children now or wait until Fall. James Morris has a weeklong arm infection.
A directors meeting of the Washburn Ice Company at the Commercial Club approved leasing the business for the coming season to Levi Stefinski who plans to start ice production early next month. The bay shore ice house near the Omaha docks was sold to Charles Johnson who will dismantle it and haul lumber to his farm for building.
A meeting at the Commercial Club in Chequamegon Bay discussed forming a Farmers Cooperative Society to aid marketing of farm products. Plans include erecting a warehouse and hiring a manager to advocate farmer interests. Another meeting is set for Monday February 5 to refine proposals.
The local post office postal savings department draws strong support with deposits over $1100 and a steady rise. Foreign born residents emerge as the most diligent patrons as funds once withheld are now deposited.
Wachsmuth Lumber Company buys Red Cliffe Lumber Company holdings in Ashland and Bayfield Counties. The deal includes timber tracts behind Bayfield and on the Apostle Islands, securing long term timber rights. The acquisition is one of the largest in the region and signals growth for Bayfield.
H. H. Peavey & Company display a superb collection of Northwestern Greening apples grown by Gus Bowers at his west city farm. The apples are large and near turning yellow good for eating, reflecting a trend among farmers to plant more of these trees in the area.
A Friday game at the Washburn Opera House pits the city team against the High School squad in the second contest of the season. The High School team seeks revenge after a narrow first-game defeat while city stars promise a strong showing. preliminaries are also planned.
