A number of civil service examinees retry after the recent testing. The Civil Service Commission in the city observed duties yesterday as part of ongoing eligibility assessments.
F E Doty escorted by officials investigated charges of dishonesty tied to a prior exam. A new examination was given yesterday afternoon with the aim of filling the Game Warden post promptly. The county plans to add a second warden, with Hoken Land of Iron River recently reappointed.
Ralph Erickson of Bessemer visits friends and relatives. A Monday evening party at Fred Roseneau’s parents home featured many young attendees and an enjoyable gathering.
Delbert G Lean the impersonator and humorist will present a program at the M E church on Tuesday evening January 28. Admission is 25 and 35 cents. The Commercial Bangor notes his readings are well chosen and his delivery ranges from laughter to poignant moments.
Edward Hines Lumber Company maintains about fifty workers as they dismantle the Barker and Steward mill at Ashland. The mill will be relocated to northern Michigan to resume sawing on timber land recently acquired by the firm.
The Bayfield jury failed to reach a verdict in the case of State v John A. McDonald and co defendants. The trial, held in Judge Attkinson's court, was billed as a test case on selling liquor to minors. The jury disagreed.
Clerk of the Court Bell presents an annual Governor’s report showing 21 cases before the court during the year, 20 initiated, four remain undisposed, zero convictions on plea, and six total dispositions with cases pending at year end.
Postmaster Nels Nelson reports ongoing trouble from children who gather in the post office after arrivals, causing disturbances that hinder work. Postal law allows calling civil officers to restore order if misbehavior continues. Parents are urged to warn children to behave while in the office or face consequences.

The county board adjourned after inspecting the Fish Creek bridge and canal road. The bridge was dropped as a county asset, and residents will fund its repair locally. the board also extended county roads to connect Ashland area towns Herbster and Port Wing. The North Wisconsin Development Association funding was cut from 1000 to 250 dollars. Auditor Axelberg reported county records auditing.
Diphtheria reports in the city include several cases and one death. Nine year old Victor Severson, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Severson, died Monday after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at midnight and he is buried in the Protestant cemetery. The Severson family receives community sympathy.
Steve Musolf from Duluth is visiting his parents, spending time at home and catching up with family.
Mrs Frank Kinne of Storm Lake Iowa writes to the TIMES arguing Northern Wisconsin offers strong farming potential. She notes land values from 75 to 125 dollars an acre and acknowledges local skepticism about clover timothy crops while urging a tangible clinching argument to attract buyers.
Washburn boys defeated Bayfield 44 to 6 and Bayfield girls won 17 to 1 in Friday night basketball at the Opera House. A return game is set for January 25 in Bayfield.
The annual Carnation Ball will be held at the opera house on February 14. It is a prominent event of the season with plans underway by committee members Carl Holmberg August Lien and Carl Anderson.
Over thirty members of the local lodge traveled to Bayfield for the Bayfield lodge installation ceremonies. A supper followed the event honoring the visiting guests.
Miss Bessie Stevens visited with friends at Ashland for several days this week and plans to leave Friday for Superior to take a course at the New Era Business college. T. C. Oscar arrived home from Minneapolis Saturday evening and resigned from Northwestern Fire and Marine Insurance to become manager of an insurance agency in Duluth. He left this morning for Duluth to start his new job.
Deputy Collector D W Corning presents Washburn port figures for 1907 showing 149 arrivals and clearances including 12 foreign, total tonnage 245 587 with coal iron pyrites log rafts cedar pole rafts and ties. Receipts and shipments value amounts to 5 198 975 amid lumber trade decline as mills close.
Sheriff A B Severson of Washburn Wisconsin announces tax collection for Clover Town after fire destroyed the original roll. Property owners must report promptly, with personal property tax due by January 10 or levy and sale will proceed. Located at Herbster on Monday December 23.
