Downs Heads Thrift Campaign For War Savings Stamps

F W Downs of this city is county chairman for the promotion of War Savings stamps or Thrift stamps in Bayfield County. The plan calls for organizing every town and extending to schools lodges and other groups to sell stamps. Post offices mail carriers and stores would serve as selling points to encourage small investors and children to save with stamps bearing government bond rates. Teachers urged to promote purchases in schools.

Local Board Sees Two Members Relieved of Duties

The Local Board of Bigticts county grants release to J. W. Dad of Bayfield and Peter J. Savage of Iron River after hardship from time demands. The board will operate with five members: C. H. Werden Mason ER, C. Alvord, Dr. Frey, Nels M. Oscar and Andy Murray Washburn.

Washburn Alumni Lose to Ashland 39 35 in Debut

The Washburn Alumni played their season opener at Ashland's Union Club last Friday evening. The locals were defeated 39 to 35 but fought hard throughout a hotly contested game. Washburn shows promise with all nine players drawn from former high school stars.

Farewell Party for Hiram Hansen at Lamoreaux Hotel

Friends of Hiram Hansen hosted a farewell banquet last Saturday at the Lamoreaux Hotel. Hansen leaves this week for Louviers to oversee a department at the California plant in a promotion recognizing his faithful service. Mrs Hansen and their son will remain in the city for the time being.

Downs Son Joins Navy On Submarine G-1

Robert Downs, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Downs, has joined the American naval forces and is stationed on the Submarine G-1. He works in electrical tasks after a lengthy training program at a top national school and is contributing to the war effort.

W W Jones Dies. longtime Madison clerk and educator

W W Jones of Madison died at his home after years of public service. He served as clerk in the Assembly for five sessions and was a former superintendent of Washturn Public Schools, following Prof. H W Rood. Washburn friends extend sympathy to his family.

Froseth Heads to Washington for FTC Post

Alfred Froseth left Sunday afternoon for Washington D C where he has been offered a fine position with the Federal Trade Commission. He plans to stay about two months to decide whether to accept the tendered role while Mrs Froseth covers duties in the Treasurer's office.

Bayfield County Completes Questionnaire Dispatches

Bayfield County plans to finish sending out draft questionnaires within four days to registered men. About 1300 sent, roughly 10 percent unreturned. Replies with few corrections. initial returns required 70 percent completion. Nonrespondents' names go to police and to Adjutant General and the Department of Justice for prosecution.

Galligan Maintains Chairmanship After Contested Election

Circuit Judge G N Risjord ruled Patrick Galligan is the legally elected chairman of Barksdale. Lee Catlin argued guards at the DuPont plant, voting residents at company barracks, were not town residents. The court rejected that challenge and Galligan retained the office by one vote margin after a jury was waived.

Mrs Arntson Dies, Funeral Set at Norwegian Church

Mrs Iver Arntson longtime Washburn resident dies in her sleep at home on west Third Street. Funeral services from the Norwegian Lutheran church will be held next Monday afternoon, with interment at Woodland Cemetery beside her husband. Survived by four sons Andrew Thomas William Martin and six grandchildren.

Fraternal War Savings Association Formed in Wisconsin

Washburn City Tax Collections Increase Over 1917

City Treasurer Miss Jerusha Johnson reports 1918 tax collections in Washburn totaling 7580.72 by this morning, up from 1415.78 last year. The Northwestern Fuel Company paid the largest single tax 4287.47. Taxes are due with no penalty until the end of the month. council may extend the penalty-free period to March 1st at its upcoming meeting.

Lincoln School Seeks Thanks for Holiday Fund Drive

George R Moore and wife returned from Antigo where they visited daughter Mrs John Albers. Mrs Arnold Thielke left for Superior after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Alfred Marsh. Lincoln school thanks the public for a Christmas entertainment that raised forty five dollars with fifteen for the YWCA and the rest to the Red Cross bringing their total Red Cross donations to fifty two dollars and fifty cents.
