Supreme Court Rules Timber Proceeds Of Chippewa Indians Belong To Estate
The Supreme Court affirmed a Western District of Wisconsin ruling in favor of United States Indian agent Samuel W. Campbell over Antoine G. Starr, an infant Chippewa member. Starr’s guardian A. Pearce Tomkins sought about twelve thousand dollars from timber sale proceeds held by Campbell, who had been paying limited sums to individual Indians. The decision upholds the restriction on alienation of timber on allotted lands and states timber’s value far exceeds land value, protecting the Indians from mismanagement of estate funds.
