Petitions for the postmaster vacancy circulate as Nelson’s term nears May 1. Candidates named include Louis Green G W Hacker L N Clausen and John Froseth. Congressman Lenroot the insurgent ally will advise on the appointment though he has not yet named a preferred candidate.
The Ladies Aid Society of the Congregational Church reviews a chain dinner plan. One hostess invites five, who invite five each, growing to 780 participants and raising 78 dollars from lunch payments. The scheme is praised as combining social and church work.
Notice declares all outstanding personal property in Washburn including horses cows pianos etc will be sold for taxes if not paid on or before February 25 1910 Nels Lee City Treasurer. Mrs Martin Sundeer visited with Cashier Hoffman of the Northern relatives and friends at Masondu Masondur State Bank spent Tuesday at Mason in the past week.
The temperance movement plans a bold campaign this spring to secure signatures for circulating petitions about the city. They aim to make the campaign vigorous with workers stationed across the city and temperance lecturers delivering talks at various times.
Marriage notices: Phil Sheridan formerly of this city now of Seattle married Miss Alverta Green of Seattle. The ceremony occurred last Wednesday Feb 16. Sheridan is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs James Sheridan of this city. Washburn friends extend congratulations.
The Norwegian language study group meets every Monday evening at the rear church parlor of the Norwegian Lutheran Church. Rev. Chr. Christiansen is the instructor. Several already attend, and interested persons should contact Rev. Christiansen or attend the next meeting.
The monthly Sunday musical at the Congregation church will be held next Sunday evening. The church orchestra will perform for the first time along with singing. All are invited to attend.
John Froseth passed the examination for the census enumerator position several weeks ago and will be appointed to count the city. He may also enumerate in other towns within the county depending on need.
The Methodist Ladies Aid Society plans a ride to Carson's next Wednesday afternoon leaving the library at 2 30 and returning by 4. The trip will be in a carry all. Mrs Will Carson hosts on Washington avenue road. All are invited.
Anticipating multiple candidates for city and ward offices, the notice explains April election timing and required nominating papers. It lists offices, filing windows, signature thresholds, and ward term expirations for aldermen and supervisors across six wards.
Miss Clara Summerfield arrives from Cusson to visit relatives as Miss Marion Bell returns to Superior to resume studies at Normal.
The Wednesday Evening Study Club held a Washington birthday banquet at Mr. and Mrs. E K Kenfield home with forty guests. Toasts honored Washington’s roles from boy to statesman, women praised, and Miss Ethel Bean visited Bell residence while teaching from Tron River.
City Clerk Axelberg publishes a comprehensive itemized report of city disbursements for ten months covering all departments. The figures detail council expenses, election costs, tax assessments, legal fees, fire and police payrolls, health, cemetery, streets, sewers, and utility charges.
William Olson, awarded the contract to put up ice for the Washburn Ice Company, will start work Monday or Tuesday after the field was scraped to aid freezing. Ice thickness is about sixteen inches and may reach twenty two inches by cutting time. Hauling will begin Tuesday morning. Olson will also supply ice for the brewery and other parties including S. E. Swanson F. Tetzner and Hotel Washburn.
G. W. Layton longtime Omaha railway company agent died at the Masonic home near Milwaukee after a brief illness. Funeral was Sunday with interment at Oakwood cemetery in Chicago. Survived by a wife and relatives. Layton, a former resident of this city, later moved to La Crosse where he went blind, then to the Masonic home. He was a member of the local Masons and Ashland Chapter lodge.
Services next Sunday morning at the usual hour with Sunday school at noon. In the evening Adelstine Berge temperance lecturer will deliver an address. The ladies and society will meet next Wednesday at the home of Mrs. A Paulson.
A drive to erect a Russian Orthodox church in Cornucopia is led by Nick Leniak to serve a large local Russian community. The note mentions Mrs. Boushey learning of her nephew Ben Astless's death in Superior. Property buyers and sellers are urged to list wants with Robinson at the Times office for quick results.
The Scandinavian Lutheran Church Association of Washburn plans a new church on section 3-48-5 in Long Lake district. They will use lumber from the old Hines round house, torn down for construction. Rev. Chr Christiansen to lead, with directors Martin Prestgaard Carl Hirsch Lawrence Nelson guiding fundraising success.
Over the past week A I Lien has teams hauling stone for the foundation of a 25 by 80 foot brick store with a stone front and 14 foot ceiling on the lot beside Gilbert Olson’s, aiming for a spring completion and a standout northern state storefront. Miss Eugena Stubbs of Superior visits the C Wright residence this week. A buyer is sought for a centrally located house at a bargain via Robinson at the Times.
