The Masons of the city plan a Washingtons birthday celebration at the Masonic Hall this evening. A roast beef supper will be served at 6 30 followed by a program with Rev. H C Rehm delivering the principal address. Members and visiting Masons are invited to attend.
Captain William O Neil formerly of this city and now superintendent of logging on the Chippewa reservations in northern Minnesota says the Detroit Investigating committee found few facts to base charges. He notes the probe mostly rehashed old stories and that he received a clean bill.
Bayfield considers forming a division of the Wisconsin Naval Militia to be circulated this week. A bay area division in three cities could generate big events and boost regional display.
The Times corrects that the city clerk and street commissioner are filled by council appointment, not by direct electors. Only the mayor, six aldermen, six supervisors, assessor, and treasurer will be chosen by voters at the spring election.
The Wisconsin Naval Militia to form a new Ashland company with Theodore Werder as hardling officer. Muster-in on February 28, with H. H. Peavey credited for driving the move. Washburn Company will be the state’s second Naval Militia unit, joining the Ashland setup.
Next summer the work of measuring the depth of Lake Superior will begin and take most of three months. Commander Guy A. Eaton will lead the Minnesota Naval Militia crew aboard the Gopher to sound depths and record water temperatures using a sounding machine. The voyage starts about July 1.
The church schedules English song service next Sunday at 7 30 to 8 00 PM. A prayer meeting is set for Thursday evening and a special service Friday evening. The Ladies Aid Society will be entertained by Mrs Soren Halversop at the church basement next Wednesday afternoon.
S. A. Oscar left yesterday afternoon for Stoughton Wisconsin to attend the Beaver Reserve Fund Fraternity Board meeting. Tom Meade traveled from Superior for a short visit and is now organizing a Nest of Owls chapter at Superior.
A large gathering of Washburn district farmers and fruit growers is planned for Saturday at the Commercial Club rooms to finalize a shippers association. A six member committee has proposed changes to the articles of incorporation and stock levels as signs of growing support. About $2,000 in stock has been subscribed with equal funds pledged in the city and country. $5,000 total expected by Saturday.
The Wisconsin Advancement Association undertakes to rework census bulletins into easily understood statistics. It cites New York counties using fertilizer to boost yields and warns readers that raw figures can mislead. The group offers to provide information to inquirers statewide.
John Walsh of this city and Thomas Ryan of Merrill will appear on the Democratic primary ballot as delegates from the Eleventh District to the National Convention in Baltimore. The ticket was chosen at a Knight hotel Ashland meeting presided by Burt Williams, with Wilson support and plans to send three delegates to Madison for the Wilson gathering. Walsh is a longtime Democratic leader in the northern part of the state.
Word reached this city that Mrs. William McWillian McMillan died at her Portland Oregon home on Thursday February 7 after a long typhoid illness. Formerly Beth Whiting she lived here years ago and taught in rural Iron Iron schools. She married shipping foreman Mr. McMillan of Alexander and Eagar Lumber. They moved to Portland six years ago where he joined Peninsula Lumber. Survived by four children youngest one and a half. Iron River Pioneer notes she was well known here with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Whiting.
About sixty friends gathered Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. E. Kenfield’s home for a birthday surprise. The pleasant afternoon featured a luncheon and ended with a gift of a dozen silver table spoons to Mrs. Kenfield.
Attorney John Walsh transacted business at Ashland Saturday evening. Mrs. Tom Meade and Mrs. C Wright visited with friends at Cusson during the forepart of the week.
Washburn Nest No 1336 O C 0 expresses deep sympathy to the widow and family of Brother Nels Pearson. The committee notes the loss, extends support, and directs the resolutions be entered in lodge minutes, copied to the bereaved, and published in city papers. In January 1912 the United States Geologic Survey recommended more than 30,000 acres in Montana and Oregon as enterable under the Enlarged 320 acre Homestead Act. It also reported 23,097 previously designated acres as not enterable and canceled after irrigation suitability was found. The Survey’s total enterable area on January 31 stood at 190,476,956 acres.
E. C. Stevens reports an inquiry for a carload of potatoes to be shipped soon. Farmers with potatoes for sale should contact Stevens warehouse or BE. C. Stevens and call at once if they wish to dispose of a portion of their crop.
The Wednesday Evening Study Club banquet at Mr. and Mrs. John Walsh residence on East Bayfield Street hosted forty two. A debate on Woman Suffrage preceded by music and toasts. 24 voted affirmative and 14 negative. Gentlemen gave short toasts and solos by Mrs E G Moore Mrs J S Fletcher and Miss Bessie Stevens accompanied the social hour.
About eighteen months ago H. H. Peavey bought a tract near Port Wing from Loveland of Minneapolis at roughly 5.50 per acre. He has now sold the land back to Loveland for 16.00 per acre, illustrating rising land values in the area.
Proponents propose a highway from Washburn and Bayfield in Bayfield County to Superior in Douglas County to spur settlement and development of agricultural lands. Land owners led by T A Loveland offer 15000 to aid construction, with Douglas County delaying action to its spring meeting and Bayfield to be approached then.
The Iron River Lumber company brought its big saw mill plant into operation for the 1912 season after repairs were completed. The plant operated steadily as wheels started, with hardwood and hemlock timber expected to be cut first and pine timber later. About 225 men are employed, making the operation significant for the city.
Bayfield boys defeat Washburn 22 to 19 in a Friday evening game at the Opera House. Washburn faced a strong effort while Bayfield maintained a slim lead throughout the contest.
Farmers and fruit growers are reminded of a meeting scheduled for next Saturday afternoon at the Commercial Club rooms. The event invites local farmers to discuss crops and market concerns with community leaders.
Some school board members ban the Junior Promenade and no event will be held this year. Mrs. F. T. Beers entertained her Sunday School class at a supper in the parlors of the Methodist church Tuesday evening.
