A two week program at the Branch Experimental Station Ashland Junction runs March 7 to 17. E J Delwiche leads the course with many prominent speakers. Farmers may ride trains daily and should bring lunches as no meals are provided. applications to Delwiche are requested to reserve space.
Charles A Payne presents a study of Mexican life, mines, rulers, and history in a lecture described as intimate and intensely interesting. The talk covers four centuries of misrule, war, anarchy, and future prospects, to be hosted at the Congregational Church on Thursday evening February 24.
A buyer can inquire through Ray Bailey at R. and D 1. H. B. Barker of the Int rtype Corporation visited the city as a business visitor earlier this week.
Remains of an unknown woodsman were found in ashes of a hunting shack seven miles from Drummond after a fire last Friday night. Authorities suspect the man, likely in town for work, slept through the blaze and perished. identification proved impossible.
Sheridan and Porter start excavation for H. H. Peavey company cottages on East Third Street. Frost yields to dynamite as basements finish, with six room houses, concrete foundations, electric lights, sewer and water. First cottages due by April, Milwaukee contractor to build two more residences likewise ready by April. The spring building boom is expected to enliven the city this summer.
Rev O L Robinson of Madison will preach at the Congregational church in this city next Sunday. He delivered a sermon here last Sunday which was enjoyed, prompting arrangements for his return this week. All members and friends are invited to attend. Spring hats in evidence indicate the coming season. All Commercial Club members are asked to attend Friday evening’s meeting.

A major remodeling updated Palace Clothing Store with a twenty foot expansion and mahogany fixtures. New ceiling paneling, a change room, mirrored cabinets, and cases create an up to date shop look. Also noted are local items: Mr and Mrs Charles Rummel welcomed a baby girl last week and the Congregational Ladies Aid plans a meeting next Wednesday at the church parlors. Mrs P J Jacobson and son visited, with the family planning to move here when a suitable dwelling is found.
A community meeting spurred business leaders to form a local Credit Association to guard against bad pay. Officers elected Monday plan a bureau to list known defaulters and aid in account collection, with central delivery and loss reduction goals.
Work on the Olson Building at Bayfield Street progresses with dynamite use to loosen frozen ground for a basement. Olson expects completion by Saturday night, then a concrete floor and rushed repairs. The front will be rebuilt with a steel and plate glass facade, beaver board ceilings, and new shelving. D. M. Carson Hardware will open a hardware store by April 1.
Farmers near Nash reported seeing what some took for a German airship heading toward the DuPont plant at Barksdale, while others believed an aeroplane was spotted in the area. Astronomers note Venus and Jupiter nearby as exceptionally bright as discussions of a possible Wills Wisconsin sighting surface.
L. D. Goodnough came back Friday from a sojourn in the sunny south of five or six weeks. On his travels he visited New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and other southern points on business. He said the south is fine but was glad to return to the bracing northern air.
Miss Margaret Moore and Aubrey J Voorhees united in marriage at the Moore home on Washington avenue with Rev. O W Smith officiating. The bride wore Point de Esprit lace and the home featured cut flowers and ferns. A reception followed from 10 to noon. the couple will reside at 487 Oakland Ave St Paul after April 1.
Walter F. Smith of the Gem Theatre plans a steel and concrete auditorium in Washburn on rear Doyle’s store lots. If built, the facility would host public meetings, road shows, rollerskating, auto shows, and various entertainments to serve a city lacking a hall for large crowds.
The Wednesday Evening Study Club of Washburn will participate in Baby Welfare Week with plans to invite local mothers and perhaps fathers to discuss infant care at various locations. Dr G S Hays of Eau Claire is slated to speak March 8 with merchants promising infant clothing displays and broad community cooperation.
