Petitions seeking a special election on switching the city to a Commission form of government have been withdrawn by petitioners and the Mayor has canceled his call for the vote. The Commercial Club met and unanimously opposed the change, commending President Wm. Olson and members for resolving the issue amicably.
A successful production by Madam and Professor M W Mathews wowed a large audience at the Opera House last Saturday. The program featured Mrs Mathews and Miss Julia Stevens in songs and readings, Prof Mathews on flute, duets, and a lively farce The Case against Casey. It received high praise and an encore is planned for tonight with improvements.
A large group of Rev Plant’s friends gathered at the Congregational Church last Thursday evening for a surprise birthday reception. A purse was raised as a gift, presented by Ed Alvord, and Rev Plant thanked the attendees amid expressions of appreciation. Ladies Aid served lunch after the event.
All outstanding personal property in the city of Washburn including horses, cows, pianos will be sold for taxes if not paid on or before February 25 1910. Nels Lee city treasurer reports a large turnout for the Rebecca ladies masquerade valentine social at the Odd Fellows hall last evening.
The Congregational church association superintendent designate Rev Dr Sheldon will visit Ashland on February 24 offering a program and evening service. Louis Segal returned Monday from a four to five day trip to the twin cities. A Valentine social at the home of Mr and Mrs A M Mitchell drew many friends for an evening of games and a short program.

County Treasurer will send a draft of 30127.53 to the State Treasurer on Monday as the full county tax for state purposes. Tax is apportioned by equalization. Bayfield Bell Barres Barksdale Cabie Clover Drummond Eileen Hughes Tron River Lincoln Mason Orienta Ouly Pilsen Port Wing Pratt Washburn and the city contribute to the total 30127.52.

Miss Florence E. Earl of Lake Mills Wis engages as assistant at Washburn High School taking Miss Lawson's place to teach history. Earl is University of Wisconsin graduate who spent a year in Europe studying. A son was born to Mr and Mrs Joe Lamereaux Monday evening making thirteen children in the family with eight boys living.
Ashland Wisconsin February 12 Jacob Hill a Finlander at Peters camp near Bibon died by his own hand after attempting to murder Louis Wold of Washburn in the same camp. Hill appeared restless then stabbed Wold at midnight before killing himself. Will Matson at McDonald’s camp near Bibon made a separate, unsuccessful attempt on his life while suffering delirium tremens.
A Washington Lincoln program will be held at Walker High School on Monday February 21. Rev. George E Plant of the Congregational church will speak on Lincoln’s life and Attorney John Walsh will discuss Washington. The event includes several musical numbers and the public is invited.
A Lost Grey Krimmer Muff was reported between the Maxcy residence and the post office on Sunday with a small reward offered for its return to Mrs. D. M. Maxcy. Supervisor of Assessments Landraint attended city business and will attend the annual Supervisors of Assessments meeting in Madison called by the State Tax Commission. A local post office receipt for a Spain tied swindle shows a London clipping about a Russian banker jailed in Spain with a fortune to transfer. The con seeks US helpers with 160000 offered and secret pockets in two grips. Government warnings follow as Rev. Christiansen visited Twin Ports.
The state tax commission will hold a preliminary hearing on the county board's equalization of Mason Pratt and Iron River property values. Notices are going to board members, and the hearing is set for March 15 in Ashland at the courthouse.
Miss Carrie Anderson daughter of George Anderson married William Arntson at the Norwegian Lutheran church with Rev. Chr. Christiansen officiating. Lena Flonness and Annie Anderson were bridesmaids. Carl Holmberg and Martin Arni son groomsmen. The couple will spend a few days in the Twin Ports before settling into city life.
Albert Shine of Hugh es county captured a fine black fox whose pelt sold for 150 dollars to John A. Pettingill of Iron River. The buyer sold it to Duluth farriers, making a neat profit before the hide shipped to New York City. Rev. George E. Plant travels to Eau Claire for a Bible Teachers meeting. J A McDonald did business in Duluth and Superior. Mr and Mrs Joe Harvey visit Peter Legacy family in the city for several days.
Louis Latts proprietor of the Bijou theatre was convicted in municipal court for violating the Sunday closing law after being arrested last Sunday afternoon along with singer Paul Goeltz. Latts had prior arrests on similar charges with one acquittal and one prior dismissal. He received a $5 fine plus costs totaling about $12. The case draws attention as Latts, observing Jewish Sabbath, had attempted to run shows on Sunday amid claims of unfair police action.
C N Cramer & Co offer two-horses for sale. Mrs W J Maitland visited in the city last week. Washburns Silver Star Dramatic Club meets with Mdm Euphaiia Matthews Thursday at 7 30. Mr and Mrs Adolph Knockson returned from Spooner after illness and death of Mrs Knocksons father. A stag party at Union Hall honored William Arnison with a well attended, pleasant gathering. Washburn Ice Co awarded contract to Wm Olson for ice up this month. plant lease for next year not yet settled.
