Banking authorities order banks to stop paying checks that overdraw accounts. Banks previously allowed overdrafts for convenience but must now adhere to stringent rules. Bank officers may be held personally liable, following a U. S. Supreme Court ruling that overdrafts misapply bank funds.
Petrograd official M Khari tonoff told the Duma Budget Committee that prohibition boosted national savings, noting December 1913 to December 1914 growth from 7,00 rubles to 29,100,000 rubles. He said total 1918 savings reached 84,000,000 rubles versus 84,000,000 in 1914, implying war costs did not yet cause great suffering.
Levi Stetinski, manager of the local ice company, announces a substantial seasonal stock. He will store 200 cards for city residents in his ice house and supplies for multiple customers including Tetzner, Swanson, and various small outlets across the city.
Announcement states Mrs F W Downs has leased the Olson building on Bayfield street to open a modern millinery shop by mid March. A top hat trimmer has been secured and stock from spring and summer lines will arrive early next month. Mrs Downs is well known locally and hopes for strong support. What Al Peavey has been laid up recently with lagrippe and quinsy.
A Washburn report details the Kenfield Lamoreaux company busy with logging and saw mill work. Trucks and rail lines haul in bolts and logs from Northern Pacific stations, feeding a day and night operation that includes a box factory, dry kilns, and loading yards. The firm, despite a general downturn, plans to expand employment and anticipates a bright outlook for the coming year.
The Go-to-Church Sunday movement observed on Feb 7 in Washburn and across Wisconsin led to larger congregations at all city services. Churches offered special programs and drew many nonregular worshippers, continuing a cooperative effort started last year.
A flurry of new members joined the Washburn Commercial Club over the last two weeks and many applications await review. Under County Board of Public Works Street Commissioner Joe Arseneau and crew began repairing the city dock this week. They are removing the damaged section and will replace it with new work, building about 208 feet anew and repairing the shore end. The project aims to yield a near new dock at a low cost, saving taxpayers, with the outer end already rebuilt two years ago.
A. S. Torkelson of this city has been named rural mail carrier for the Bayfield route and will begin duties on the 15th of the month. He and his family plan to move to Bayfield soon.
The Spooner Advocate notes a Friday evening Commercial Club meeting to be attended by members. Spaeth and Pearson are newly advertised grocery merchants from Spooner, with Spaeth formerly a railroad man and well known in the city.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld a Bayfield county ruling awarding Mary Carlson administrator $5,000 for the death of Fred Carlson after a 1913 Bayfield street railing fall. Carlson, employed by J. S. Stearns Lumber, died from injuries after the fall near 5th and 6th avenues. The city argued the railing was not defective. the Carlson estate argued failure to maintain. The court sustained the lower court verdict directing judgment for the Carlson estate.
Early morning blaze in the home of Mr. F. A. Bell and family left the dwelling and its contents a total loss with no insurance. Herbert Bell woke to crackling flames in the kitchen corner and alerted others while neighbors called the fire department. The origin remains undetermined though Mr. Bell suspects mice in the wood box started the fire after a cold night with a delayed water system.
William Kohn owner of the Pabst cafe shot himself Monday around 11 am. The body was found by a porter in a second floor room of the Pabst block. a physician said death was instantaneous. He left a despondent noteless, leaving a wife and two children.
The ladies of the Catholic church held a social and card party at St. Louis hall last evening. The event was well attended and described as a very pleasant gathering.
C. F. Libby of Fond du Lac Grand Lecturer for the Knights of Pythias conferred the Bank of Page on a candidate at the local lodge meeting on Tuesday evening. He explained new work and his visit was described as very beneficial to members.
Mr and Mrs Nels Myhre returned from Baldwin after attending the golden wedding of Mr Myhres parents and a Myhre family reunion. The events marked a notable family gathering with relatives from the area and beyond.
Rural and graded Wisconsin schools prepare for the state spelling contest with local town and county rounds. Oral prelims run between March 15 and April 1, 100 word written lists from the Wisconsin State Fair. winners advance from town to county contests at the county seat.
John Gibson’s ten pin team travels to Ashland this evening to face the Elk’s Club on their alleys. Gibson expects a win while Elk’s pledges to “take the Old Tyme Team” into camp. A rematch in this city is possible soon.
