A city snow plow has operated since yesterday at noon, making significant progress clearing snow from streets and improving travel.
Blizzard Closes Streets After Early Season Snowstorm
A regular blizzard hit Tuesday through Wednesday with thick snow and a fifty mile gale. Travel was nearly paralyzed as trains delayed and communications disrupted. Streets remain blocked and will take days to clear though sleighing was briefly revived.
Death by Own Action of Charles Ness at Grandview
Charles Ness a former city resident and six year camp foreman for the Stearns Lumber Co of Odanah died at Ashland’s St Joseph Hospital after slashing his throat at Grandview last Friday morning. Found behind the Sibbald hotel he had a card naming Ole Aune of Washburn as notifying relative. Ness was said to have acted during a spell of temporary insanity. He was buried in the Protestant cemetery after services in this city.

County to Seek Reimbursement for Insane Care Costs
At the county board meeting a resolution directed the District Attorney to collect from responsible relatives sums legally payable to the county for maintaining insane or feeble minded persons in state or county institutions. The county has paid over $30,000 in six years and will certify this to the DA for collection. Property of those committed who have assets will be seized to satisfy the debt.
Lumberjack Matteson Killed Falling From Bridge at Cusson
A lumberjack named Matteson died in Cusson after falling from a railroad bridge onto the ice. He had been in Iron River recently and returned to camps. A coroner's inquest from Iron River was held. witnesses say intoxication contributed to the fall. Matteson was an experienced woodsman with many years of work in the mills.

Fire destroys Foster Latimer planing mill at Mellen
A disastrous blaze in Mellen gutted the Foster Latimer Lumber planing mill before firefighters arrived. The plant, recently updated with a new floor mill, engines, and dynamos, was reported a heavy loss while Latimer and Foster were in Stanley on business. The fire’s origin remains unknown, first seen in the mill’s east end.
