Hammond Dies After Elevated Train Shooting
Alonzo Hammond died yesterday at West Side Hospital after being shot two weeks earlier by George H. Gould at Kedzie avenue near the Metropolitan elevated line. Gould appeared in Desplaines street police court on a charge of intent to kill with bonds set at $20 000 and a hearing postponed until next Saturday. Hammond, once an Ashland express messenger, was widely known and mourned after the incident sparked by suspected elopement of Gould's wife.

City Council Discusses Fire Safety and Public Halls
A city council meeting approved changes to the fire department and alarm system. The force will be reduced to thirty-two firefighters with four eight-man companies, and alarms will show box number and district.
