Invitations have been sent for the annual Carnation Ball to be hosted by the Knights of Pythias on Tuesday February 12. The lodge, famed for its entertaining members, expects society figures and will distribute 300 carnations to guests.
The M E Ladies' Aid society will hold a Swap Social at Mrs F T Yates' home tomorrow evening. Many attendees are expected to join the event. Meanwhile, the National Ski tournament starts in Ashland with long distance races and a convention today and tonight and dog races plus ski jumping tomorrow.
A. H. Hosmer of Washburn represented by Richard Sleight seeks a state level review of the county board’s 1906 equalization. He contends Washburn was overassessed while other towns were underassessed, detailing Washburn’s population, industries, and property values including a dynamite plant worth up to 300,000 and a city real and personal value near 2,000,000 with 860 buildings and multiple major structures.
The Lyceum Bureau presents Miss Josephine Retz and Miss Dorothy Nehrbas for a complete two-person program. Retz sings and reads with her own accompaniment while Nehrbas violin plays and accompanies. The act blends reader and musician roles to resemble a four-member show at reduced cost.
Lester E. Geselle traveled from his Fish Creek school to spend Sunday locally.
The Washburn common council met at the city clerk’s office with Civic League members present. A resolution to drop the city’s interest in a $10,000 suit involving Nels Lee was read and laid over. Several ordinances on minors in billiard halls, Sunday closing, brothels, and public drunkenness were read for the first time and laid over for the next meeting. Bills were audited and allowed.

Local ski riders held a hillside contest west of the box factory with Lars Larson winning first place. Scores show Lars Larson 500 points, A Hustland 475, Arnol Hustland 475, Hans Thompson 370, Henry Thompson 345, Martin Peterson 325, Monroe Sprague 820.
The young ladies of the church plan a social next Saturday evening at the Scandinavian ME Church. Rev. S. L. Trelstad of Superior will attend and provide several musical numbers. Meetings held during the week by Rev. Trelstad have been well attended and will continue. All are invited.
The Norwegian Lutheran Church will hold Sunday evening services at 7 30 on February 10th with a sermon by Rev Luis S Marvick. Pastor's residence is 1109 West Sixth Street Ashland. New telephone listed. Sunday school is held every Sunday from noon to 1 o'clock.
