Bemidji Minn Jan 31 Firefighters fought an all night battle to save the Segal Emporium a large Bemidji dry goods store owned by Jake Segal formerly of the city The fire was controlled at 6 am after walls separated the store from neighboring buildings The loss to building and contents was 15000 with 3000 on the building and 12000 on stock both fully insured, the district feared for a time.
North Wisconsin farmers urged to apply for a one week school at the Branch Experiment Station in Ashland Junction March 16 to 20. Experts cover dairy, crops, soils and horticulture with daily sessions and evening lectures, plus an annual meeting of the Lake Superior Experiment Association.
Charles J. Riipi of Clover Bayfield County was bound over to the circuit court on assault with force and arms charges. Witness John Pudas testified he and Riipi’s father Olof argued over stamping logs. Pudas claimed Riipi hit him with a gun. Riipi posted 200 bond for trial. judge Calder discharged the elder Riipi after an all day hearing.
Five box bolts cars derailed blocking the Oraabs railway near the N P crossing last Friday afternoon. The 4 30 train transferred passengers, who later rode to Bayfield by engine 12. The Barksdale run continued as the regular passenger scout. Track cleared by six that evening and service resumed.
Lieutenant Commander Henry Bitschenaur of the Ashland Naval Militia says no members from the Chequamegon bay divisions will travel through the Panama this month. Initially it was believed several members could ride the battleships, but now no member will be granted the privilege.
A large group from this city traveled to Ashland last Friday to attend the Ashland lodge installation of officers at the Eagles hall. Attendees reported a very pleasant time.
Next Sunday February 7 Wisconsin observes Go to Church Sunday with Washburn churches offering special services. The movement aims to draw sporadic attenders to worship at least once a year and many churches expect crowded services across the state.
Friday evening event at the church parlors features a Penny Social with supper starting at 5 30. Refreshments priced at one cent each and tickets also one cent. Invites all to attend with family for good food and a pleasant time.
J. D. Rogers and W. W. Enigh of Chicago inspected local farms this week and each bought a forty acre tract in Section 13-48-5 near the dynamite plant, with George F. Morgan handling the sale.
Services next Sunday morning with Sunday school at noon. Long Lake church holds 2:30 pm service with English service in the evening. The ladies and society meet next Wednesday afternoon at the church parlors, hosted by Mrs James Kinney and Mrs Adolph Kinney.

A party was held at Mrs Griffen's home last Thursday afternoon to honor her 78th birthday. About forty friends and neighbors attended and a pleasant afternoon was spent. Refreshments were served. Mrs Griffen was presented with a plush coat by the guests.
Peter Soronen of Clover was a business visitor in the city at the start of the week, meeting local merchants and discussing opportunities.
A telegram from Amacortes Washington reports the death of John Cudmore who was killed in an unspecified accident. Former resident son of Henry Cudmore, he left the city eight years ago and is survived by a wife and two children. Relatives receive condolences from friends.
The Mothers Club will meet at the Lincoln school on Friday February 12. The Pie Social by the True Blue class of the Methodist Sunday School at the church parlors last Friday was well attended and a neat sum was realized.
In an Opera House showdown, Ashland Naval Militia defeated Washburn City Team 31 to 24. Washburn led 12 to 10 at halftime, but Ashland surged in the second half with strong long throws and unguarded baskets. A large Ashland crowd and a two piece band provided lively support.
Olaf Loken age 26 years and 19 days son of Mr and Mrs Gust Loken of Washurny died Friday night after a long illness with tuberculosis pneumonia. Funeral held Tuesday from home and Norwegian Lutheran church Rev Chr Christianson presiding. Interment Woodland cemetery. Sympathy from family and friends.
The ladies of the St Louis church host a social card party at St Louis Hall on Wednesday evening February 10 inviting all to attend.
