James Cook Wins Auto in Local Subscription Contest
James J. Cook of Washburn won an Oakland automobile and a Harley Davidson motorcycle in the Duluth News Tribune subscription contest for the F. T. Beers Club. He led his 5th district with 3,465,440 votes and will have prizes turned over to the Beers Club for clubroom improvements. Bertha Olson of Port Wing won a $200 diamond ring.

Toll rate cut announced for Iron River line
The North Wisconsin Toll Line, part of the Home company, says a new 16 cent flat toll to Iron River replaces the 21 cent rate. Bayfield County Telephone manager McKinney, also president of North Wisconsin Lines, states rates are being equalized as quickly as possible and the new cuts will save residents money over a year of phone service.

DeMars returns from Minneapolis with Studebaker agency
Harvey DeMars of the Service Garage returns from Minneapolis where he studied electrical appliances lights and starters for automobiles. He secured the Studebaker agency for the coming season and praises the 1916 model as a beauty. The Congregational Ladies Aid meets at the church parlors next Wednesday afternoon hosted by Mrs Lamoreaux and Mrs Fietcher.

Death in Crossing Kills H. P. Hanson at Hulbert House
The Washburn community mourns H. P. Hanson known as Pete, killed when struck by a passenger train at the Hulbert House crossing around nine this Sunday morning. Hanson, 54, yard superintendent for M. H. Sprague Lumber, left home for the Sprague office and likely did not hear the train due to snow and a recent illness. A coroner's inquest ruled death accidental from train No. 181. He leaves a wife Mary Peterson and four sons Harry Chester Walter and Norman, with services at 1:30 p m at Bayfield Street and interment in Woodland cemetery.

Death of Robert McMeekin in Idaho Rail Accident
William McMeekin learns by telegram of his son Robert's death in a Sand Point Idaho railway accident on Sunday January 30. The body arrives next Sunday with aunt Emma Hanna. Funeral at the McMeekin home on West Pine Street Tuesday at 2 PM. Robert, 26, left five years ago for the coast to work on railways. The family extends heartfelt sympathies.

Washburn Adds Hardware Store and Tailor Shop
The Washburn Dye works proprietor Otto Zeilsdorf will run a receiving and distribution station in the Mitchell building offering cleaning and pressing with plans for a carry- over tailor shop. In Washburn another hardware venture Moore and Carson, led by George R. Moore and Dean Carson, will occupy the Olson Building next to the 99c Store. The Olson site will undergo a full remodel with brick front, plate glass, a basement, new floors, shelving, wiring, and utilities, ready by April 1. Both firms are locally known and optimistic about the venture.
