City Treasurer Nels Lee reports a busy period with $27,884.68 collected up to yesterday noon. The three to four day push includes $10,209.15 since Saturday and $3,922.68 on Tuesday. The full levy totals $44,066.66 with $14,534.02 earmarked for county and state taxes and the remainder for city expenses next year.
Another large Washburn Horticultural Society gathering is set for Monday evening February 13 in the Commercial Club rooms. The society, already among the state's largest, seeks to boost membership to 100 before the next meeting and urges nonmembers to join.
A Friday evening game at the Washburn pera House features the Ashland City Team facing Washburn City in a promising contest. Washburn has strengthened its lineup and is expected to push a hard battle against Ashland in this season’s best matchup to date.
Eliza Sophia Molnaa four months fifteen days old, daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Molnaa of Washburn, died Sunday morning after a bout with whooping cough and a severe cold. Funeral held yesterday afternoon with Rev Chr Christianson of the Norwegian Lutheran church officiating, burial in the Public Cemetery.
A proposed measure in the state legislature would prohibit issuing saloon licenses in cities with a state university or within one mile of any normal school agricultural school or soldier's home. The bill would affect Madison and Superior alongside several other cities.
Mrs Eliza Harris died Friday at age 70 years and 9 months after a month long illness in the home of her brother D W Corning. She came to city before Christmas and was confined mostly at home. Funeral from Corning residence Sunday and burial in Oshkosh family cemetery. Born Manchester New Hampshire she previously lived here with her son Byron who resides in Duluth. Survived by two sisters and two brothers Lucinda Corning D W Corning Bertha Smith Kilborn Wis Horace Corning Chicago. The family and relatives extend sympathy.

At the annual meeting last Thursday evening the Congregational church elected Cork as treasurer and others including J. W. Gibson and E. G. Stevens as officers for the coming year. Rev. George E. Plant tendered his resignation as pastor to take effect May 1, and the resignation was accepted.
The Misses Opal Frost and Genevieve Willey visited relatives and friends from the Superior Normal school during the past week. A Berge the temperance lecturer leaves today for the southern part of the state to deliver lectures on temperance.
Mayor G A Herring announces immediate enforcement of a city ordinance requiring milk dealers to obtain annual licenses. Licenses cost 1.00 per year for wagon deliveries and 0.25 per year for carrier deliveries. Dealers must show a tuberculosis test certificate from the past two years before licensing, or selling milk is prohibited.
The official Methodist church board met at the parsonage Monday evening with all members and several guests. They discussed church affairs and planned new work for the year. The treasurer reported the church in good financial standing thanks to Pastor Rev. J. H. Chatterson. All church branches were flourishing. A social time followed with luncheon served by Mrs. Chatterson.
Miss Edna Unngrodt and Miss Grace Greenwood depart for Superior to attend the Normal school for the balance of the season. A farewell party hosted by the Knights of Pythias honored Clarence Reister who plans to leave Sunday for Chippewa Falls. the smoker was enjoyed by the group. The Glidden enterprise urges a July August September tax payment plan, arguing most people have funds now to better meet taxes under a changed system.
The lumberjack James Elward once lived in this city on west 4th street in his early days before moving to Cumberland. He was murdered near Hayward last week in a brutal axe attack. A Finlander is suspected after a cashing of a check found on the victim, with blood stains on the check. the killer fled toward Duluth and remains at large with a detailed description available.
Amil Scantland of the Orpheum Theatre announces another big show this Saturday evening. The program includes a high class motion picture, singing by the Orpheum Quartette, and music by a five piece orchestra. Admission is 10 cents.
Miss Violet Hannifin, 5th and 6th grade teacher at the Pioncer school, has been confined to her rooms this week due to illness. Miss Waters of Ashland has been taking her place this week.
The Bayfield County Fair association held its annual meeting in Iron River Tuesday electing W B Clubine for a third season as president joined by Charles S Hobbs as first vice president and M C Helmer as secretary with W B Johnson as assistant secretary The group plans a larger county fair next fall with numerous grounds improvements noted during the past year and continued growth of the exhibition. The school board adopted a rule allowing teachers with four years permanent service to be placed on the permanent list exempt from annual appointment subject to superintendent and board approval and right to be heard on charges if dismissal is proposed.
Milwaukee reports Wisconsin again sets a record in the Red Cross Christmas seal campaign with per capita sales led by Columbus at 25.33 and prize winnings of a $350 Henning piano for the city over 2,000 population. Richland Center second at 19.22, Kenosha first among 15,000 plus cities with 5,981 per capita, Madison 4.88, Eau Claire 4.33. Glidden faces rule-based prize reassignment after late returns. Antigo receives prize adjustment. Final returns not yet in, but state claims another world record in the drive.

Lew Anderson and family of Ashland were seen visiting the Fox residence in this city last Sunday. Joe Failing and family have moved to Barksdale and will occupy the residence vacated by Thos Duggan and family.

County boards action calls for the DA to initiate proceedings to recover sums due the county from County Treasurer H. O. Lien. A deficit of 187,441 dollars is cited after audits by the Auditor and the special accountant H P Axelberg. Lien disputes the figures and says the accounts will balance with a thorough review.
The Owl lodge hosted a Friday masquerade at the Opera house, praised as one of the citys best events in years. Notable costumes won prizes for Miss Rose Major Mr Jay Murphy and Mr Bert Robinson while Westerlunds five piece orchestra provided the music. A H Hosmer of Nash conducted business in the city yesterday.
