A special circuit court session Saturday heard arguments on John Specht’s motion for a new trial after his second degree murder conviction. Attorney Walsh argued for a new trial while District Attorney Alvord opposed. Judge Parish denied the motion and then sentenced Specht to a lengthy prison term.
Attorney Walsh will appeal to the Supreme Court after copying testimony and preparing papers. If granted, Specht may have his term reduced on good behavior to eleven years and three months.
At the regular Knights of Pythias meeting officers were elected for the coming year: Chancelor Commander Nels M. Oscar, Vice Chancellor M. A. Poppe, Prelate August Lien, Master of Works L. L. Birdsey, K. of R. & S. A. I. Lien, Master at Arms T. H. Robinson, Inner Guard Carl Anderson, Outer Guard Ole Hovde, Trustee Charles Boyd, Grand Representative T. H. Robinson. Also notes deer season closed Saturday night with Tuesday as the deadline to bring in deer killed.
The Thompson Mill property, the city’s last operating mill, changes hands to Marsh Hathway Co of Chicago. J A Semer and C B Simpson led the talks, with timber holdings planned on islands and a Northwestern Railroad tract in Ashland County. Local arrival expected to finalize transfer. timber will be sawed locally, prolonging mill life.
At a Tuesday Common Council meeting the 3.5 percent cap was confirmed for city taxes. With the city assessed at 1 829 719 dollars the levy of 46 540.16 dollars covers interest on city bonds old bonds and interest schools county and state tax library and general fund. An adjournment was set to Friday to discuss a commission system for electric lighting and mayoral appointees.
Agent C. W. Layton of Omaha escaped serious harm Friday afternoon when a Barksdale special passed by and wedged him between the scales and the cars while weighing vehicles. He was bruised but not seriously hurt and counted himself lucky.

Two major fires raged in coal piles at Northwestern Fuel Company docks over the past week. Wet coal caused combustion and after about four thousand tons were moved, crews managed to extinguish the fires.
The Johnson family expresses heartfelt thanks to friends and neighbors for support during the illness and death of their daughter and sister. The notice also includes an unrelated public-service line urging pensioners to notify the game warden of their holdings, naming Hoken Lund in Iron River.

Beath Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Johnson died sudden Friday afternoon after hospital visit. Magn us Olson died this morning at John Thorsen residence on Sixth street leaving a son.
Chovin sold his groceries stock business and goodwill to Mike Burgo this week. Chovin ran the store two years with Mrs Chovin assisting, the enterprise grew large enough that work became hard. The store on lower Bigelow street changes hands to Burgo, a well known city figure, who expects good trade.
The M. E. Church notes evangelistic services in progress with a sermon titled Its up to You. A Friday evening youth meeting will feature Rev Johnson discussing amusements. Morning service at 10 45 and Sunday school remain as usual. Evangelist Johnson leads the Young Peoples Alliance and closes with a sermon tonight.
Mrs. John Sharron hosted a Sunday evening card party for visitor Edward Derouin from Eau Claire. Honors went to Miss Sophia Beaulieu and Wallace Clifton. A dainty lunch followed at eleven, and guests departed satisfied with the evening.
The city assumed control of the Hitectric Light and Power Company plant last Monday noon and Mayor Supt. Downs will run it until a legally appointed commission takes over. Downs will likely stay in charge. residents urge restoring all street lights and extending hours for a full all night service.
Sheriff Severson and County Clerk Oscar spent Saturday at Port Wing and Herbster to rebuild the town of Clover records after a fire destroyed the assessment roll and tax roll. The Clerk must recreate the rolls and the Sheriff is tasked with collecting the resulting taxes.
