Washburn Leads In Regional High School Contest
Washburn High School topped the Bayfield district finals with the two first place winners Albert Aune in declamation and Philip Sheridan in oratory. Washburn will represent at the final in our city, likely May 8 or 15, with entrants from Superior, Bessemer, Ironwood, Hurley, Ashland, Iron River and Bayfield. The opera house hosts the next contest after the Bayfield event.

Dynamite Plant Project Moves From River Bank

Death of Mrs. Joseph Stevens in Ashland
Mrs. Joseph Stevens died at her Ashland home last Thursday night about six. She was sixty two, long afflicted by Brights disease. A Ashland resident for ten years she spent much of her time ill and sometimes visited her son in this city. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the residence with a large attendance and many flowers.

Two Sites Considered for Carnegie Library in Washburn
The Public Library Board met to pick a site for the new Carnegie library. Beausoliel property at 3500 and land above the Bank of Washburn were proposed, with seven lots at 800 or fourteen lots at 1300 total. A committee of Oscar, McWilliams, Irish, Lamoreaux and Lowder will decide within ten days, aiming to start building once a site is chosen.

Mahara Minstrels Bring Grand Royal Carnival to Opera House
Mahara Minstrels led by George Titchner perform at the royal carnival in the Opera House next Monday night May 4. A thirty member colored troupe showcases minstrel vaudeville and opera with scenery effects, costumes, and a brass band. The company travels in its own palace car and plans a noon street parade by the Mahara Brothers famous challenge band and orchestra.
