Washburn High School preliminaries crown winners for division contest

The Washburn High School preliminary contest featured ten declamations and two orations with prizes awarded. Philip Sheridan won first in oration on Abraham Lincoln, Albert Aune topped declamation with The Boy Orator of Zepata City, and Miss Jessie Sheridan took second. The top contestants will represent Washburn at the Bayfield division contest next Saturday night.

Washburn Annual Meeting Approves Macadam Streets Plan

Town of Washburn voters authorize purchase of a rock crusher for macadamized streets. Salaries kept level, police and fire provisions debated. Budgets set for fire department hydrants lights roads library and other needs. Cattle on streets issue stirred strong opinions before close of meeting.

Northern Wisconsin Press Association to Meet in West Superior

Sheridan used a harangue on voters while E Bryan Dr Mertens and others debated a cows question. the house divided twice and carried by a close vote before adjournment. The Rice Lake Chronotype notes the upcoming meeting at West Superior and vows loyalty to the association and its continuance.

Carnegie Library Joins Bayfield, Site Set on Broad Street

Andrew Carnegie has donated 10,000 for a free library in Bayfield. The library board chose lots 8,9,10 in block 75 at Washington Ave and Broad St, paying 650 with possible rebate. Plans drawn at once. building to rise soon facing Broad Street near the ravine. The paper urged park development at the ravine head as a beauty spot.

First Boat Gratwick Arrives as Harbors Open

Navigation opened in Chequamegon Bay as the Steamer Gratwick from Hancock Michigan arrived and loaded 195000 bushels at the elevator dock. The Elphicke, the harbor's largest freighter at 460 feet, loaded 333000 bushels but could not top capacity due to Soo low water. The Phoenix and Currie followed with 120000 and 225000 bushels, while Wilhelm tied up for lumber. Ice and navigation delays affected ashore loading on both sides of the bay.
