Charles Noyes of this city announces his candidacy for the office of Supervisor of Assessments to replace George F. Morgan who has resigned. The county board meeting next Monday will hear the resignation and accept it. Noyes is presently the only candidate.
The man previously served as city assessor for multiple terms and ran for the same office while a member of the county board two years ago. That election was later declared illegal, creating a renewed bid for the position.
New Mill Raarup Brothers have purchased a portable saw mill to be set up on their land above the city for summer lumber work. A twenty five horsepower gasoline engine will run the mill, providing jobs for six or seven men. The mill is to arrive the first part of next month.
Mrs. W. J. Maitland visited in Duluth at the start of the week. P. J. Bogie has gone to Iron River to oversee the Hines mill run. He plans to move his family there this summer.
Dr Mertens plans to start a sanitarium in Bayfield using the old court house building. The Commercial Club backed repairs and a city appropriation is expected to fund the project, with the doctor contributing more. Washburn mourns his departure, while Bayfield gains a respected physician and new hospital facility.
Tomorrow evening pupils from Superior Bayfield Iron River and Washburn will compete in a division contest to select entrants for the May 3 final in this city. Washburn will be represented by Miss Fern Sweezey in recitation and Mr. Thomas Kearns in oration. Winners from last Friday’s prelims at the Methodist church include Miss Sweezey Miss Cooklar Miss Carrie Alvord Miss Irene Walsh and Mr. Clifford Wescott and Mr. Thomas Kearns with parts from Graday and Phillips. Judges were A W McLeod Miss Sams Rev Weiss Rev Pengilly and Nels M Oscar.
Confirmation service at 10 a.m. led by Rev. Marvick of Ashland with the church pastor assisting. Also services at 7 45 p.m. A cordial invitation extended. CHR. CHRISTIANSON, Pastor. J. A. Coats visited Superior to install a gasoline lighting plant in T.J. Anderson's large grocery, 50 by 100 feet, with fifteen 500 candle power lights.
Next Sunday at 10 30 morning service will feature Christ's Last Promise to the Disciples and its Purpose with evening service Before and After. Choir and Sunday school plan good music and singing. A concert for church benefit is set for Wednesday April 24 at 7 30 with admission 10 cents. The program includes piano trio, various solos, quartets, and a male quartet.
The Commercial Club met to plan for presenting to the County Board next Monday a request for a road through four mile creek country along the Bayfield Bell Washburn town lines. They seek county funding as Bayfield Bell and Washburn won t fund the project. A new Northern Pacific depot proposal was also discussed with a committee appointed to report to railroad officials.
John Fraser died Wednesday after months of poor health at 7 45 yesterday morning at his son Andrew Fraser's home on Lower Bayfield Street. Funeral services will be from the home at two o'clock Friday with burial in Protestant Cemetery. He came from Canada about three years ago and has relatives in this city and Canada. The community extends condolences to the family.
All members and friends are urged to attend the prayer meeting this evening to start the new work and hear the opening chapter of Hamilton Wright Mabie's Parables of Life. On Sunday morning the pastor will begin a series of sermons in The Use of Christians.

Dr. J R Mitchell sails for the Bahama Islands to serve as physician for the Bahama Timber Company. He will oversee a new hospital and receive a large salary while planning later study in Vienna. Dr. John T Schmershall will handle practice in his absence.
County Treasurer Froseth notes that the current delinquent tax collection total of 2 978 41 exceeds last year's 2 439 82 for the same period, though the delinquent list is smaller. The May 21 sale is expected to be the smallest in years with fewer properties descriptions to be sold.
From July 1 ordinary stamps may substitute for a special delivery stamp without forcing a trip to the post office. An additional ten cents in ordinary stamps of any denomination must be attached with the words Special Delivery or equivalent clearly indicated on the envelope. The item will be handled and delivered as if the regular special delivery stamp were affixed.
