Miss Beers Wins District Declamatory Honors

Miss Beers won first place in the Washburn High School declamatory contest held Friday. Marie Raarup tied for second but won on a percentage basis. Harriet Johnston earned high praise for The Last Word. Other entrants included Phyllis Goedeke and Luella Olson, with judges Mrs. Alvord, Mrs. Sheridan and Mrs. Fletcher.

Give Cub of Northland College to Perform in City Church

The Give Cub of Northland College will present a concert and entertainment at the Congregational church this Friday evening. The college group has visited here before and the program is expected to draw a large audience.

MacLeod Elected Mayor Receives Endorsement in Tuesday Vote

In Washburn the election yielded a light turnout of 424 votes. Arthur W. MacLeod won the mayoral race with a 96 vote margin, carrying all wards except the third. Kinney won the assessor post. Miss Jerusha Johnson became city treasurer, the first woman in the role. A shooting accident injured 15-year-old Charles Gierczak in Ashland while hunting rats.

Hospital talk spurs city interest and growth plans

Local discussion on a new hospital rises as Ashland partners with the city to build one. A first class hospital is viewed as a profitable investment with strong support from manufacturing firms. Home Bakery Opens in Doyle Building Near Washington

The Home Bakery operated by Nelson and Bergren began business last Saturday in the Doyle building near Washington Avenue and has since drawn good patronage. They maintain a well equipped bakery and will also run a dairy lunch in connection.

Farmers Take Over Washburn Creamery Under Co-op Plan

C A McKinney, experienced in midwest creamery co-ops, leads efforts to form a farmer owned cooperative to take over the White Rose Creamery Co. plant in Washburn. The district spans Onion River east, Marion farm north, and Nash southwest, with shares kept affordable to include many farmers. McKinney envisions a strong, locally managed dairy hub for northern Wisconsin.
